Gates left because he probably felt he had a better career path elsewhere. After the Florida gig did not work out, he chose not to return to NU then, so I doubt he would be wanting to return now.

My experience in the business world says staff that leave for a perceived better job and return, eventually leave again for the same reasons they left in the first place.
