Another women's tounament

Can someone explain in simple terms? My brain isn't working today.

This is the NCAA's replacement for the 64 team post-season WNIT. While smaller than the WNIT in number of teams, it is funded by the NCAA (as is the main tourney), as differentiated from the WNIT, a for profit tournament paid for by its participants. That is, you paid to travel and if you won the hosting bid, it was because you paid to be a host. A decent sum as the tourney went on, remember a few years ago Arizona hosted every round - winning - and some of the numbers hit the local paper.

It is the death knell of the WNIT as we know it, just as on the men's side the NIT is an NCAA property so far as I know.

There will still be a WNIT. It probably won't last long, though. Here is their statement.
