Anyone out there ever been bothered by this condition? I woke up yesterday with a big fat top lip. After seeing urgent care and receiving a shot in the but and some oral medication almost all of the swelling went down but lip still feels numb. Just curious does it all go away, and will it happen again?

I’ve had it frequently over the past 10-15 years. it’s basically an allergy — an immune system reaction. It can certainly come back again if you’re exposed to the same thing that triggered it this time. It can be triggered by something that previously never caused a problem.

In my case, there have been several “triggers”. Over time, for some unknown reason, I have developed angioedema reactions to: ibuprofen , cipro, polyethylene glycol (an ingredient in many prescription drugs), sulfa drugs, and others. For me, the cause is always some ingredient in a prescription drug or possibly an over-the-counter medicine — never by food.

Once you have had an angioedema reaction to a substance, you will probably remain severely allergic to that substance for life. The immune system has a long memory. As far as I can tell, no one really knows why one would suddenly have an immune reaction to something you’ve never had a problem with before.

Angioedema can be life threatening in some cases. For me, fortunately it has always (so far) been limited to the face and lips in most instances. I have at times carried an epi-pen j in case of a severe reaction.

Sorry you’re having to deal with this. I hope you can discern the cause and eliminate the problem.

Couple years ago about every other day my top lip would swell up pretty big. I went to the doctor and he said it was likely an allergy to spicy food and said I should take Claritin every day. I am a senior and he said you could develop allergies to food you've never been allergic to, especially spicy sauces. That night I ate at a restaurant and got BBQ chicken. And my lip swelled. I used Claritin for a while and it didn't help. I switched to Zyrtec at my doctor's recommendation and it has worked. I've taken 1 every day for 4 years now with no furthere lip swelling.

It came back. I woke up this morning with my tongue so swollen that I could hardly swallow. I went back to urgent care and got a Benadryl shot as it was too soon for another steroid. We are not sure what caused it but, in both cases, I used a Tylenol patch overnight for pain. For now, that will be what I think is the cause.

Pharmacist here, and when I worked retail, I saw this a few times in patients taking ACE inhibitors, like lisinopril, for high blood pressure or heart failure. It's somewhat common in this drug family, and can also be seen, although less often, in the ARB drugs like losartan, which are similar to ACE inhibitors. I'm sure any provider you saw about this would have assessed for these drugs, though.

How is it going. Any more episodes? Have you sorted out what was causing the angioedema?

Hope you're doing well.

I have had several more episodes. At first, we thought it was coming from a Tylenol patch I was using but had more cases after I stopped using the patches, The other common factor was Skinny Pop popcorn. For now, we are going with that as I have had no more episodes after stopping the popcorn several weeks ago. Thanks for asking.
