I figured this would be fun to think about. But who is your all time SEC team. 12 players from all the team's combined. Mine would be:

Starters:

PG: Pistol Pete
SG: Dominique Wilkins
SF: Charles Barkley
PF: Anthony Davis
C: Shaq

My bench would be:
Johnny Neumann
John Wall
Glen Davis
Jamal Mashburn
Demarcus Cousins
Joakim Noah
Gerald Wallace

Now I know I left off a ton of great players but there was only 12 spots available. Let's hear your team.

You've got Glen Davis, Joakim Noah and Gerald Wallace on the team but not Dan Issel? Issel was a consensus 1st Team All American two years and all SEC three years, in an era of great individual talents. I know Noah and Davis were never 1st Team All-Americans even once.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but I'm a firm believer that big men back in the day would absolutely get schooled by the new generation. Now that's just my opinion and I know everyone differs on that argument.

Any multi-generational comparison can be difficult.

About 20 years ago an acquaintance of mine said "Sandy Koufax would be a 3rd or 4th starter today."

He also was a steroid denier.

Now he understands. About roids AND Koufax.

I believe that the only fair evaluation is not how they would have performed, but how they did perform...against their contemporaries.

Can you leave out Bob Pettit (LSU)? He led the SEC in scoring all three varsity seasons.

I will list others.

We've had several players in the last decade alone that I would pick before Gerald Wallace and Glen Davis.
Gerald Wallace in his prime was a 15 ppg 10 rebound 2 blk 2stl per game guy. That's really good all around talent that does gritty stuff to help the team win.

Guys I would also add for consideration:
Ernie Grunfeld
Kyle Macy
Corliss Williamson
Kenny Walker
Bernard King
Reggie King
Dale Ellis

First Team:
G/MVP - Pete Maravich (Gets my vote for best SEC player ever)
G - Sidney Moncrief
F - Bernard King
F - Dominique Wilkins
C - Shaquille O'Neal

Second Team:
G - Chris Jackson
G - Allan Houston
F/C - Dan Issel
F - Bob Pettit
F/C - Anthony Davis

*Based strictly on their college careers.
**Since OP said 12 players, my last two are: Charles Barkley, Ralph Beard.
***You can make an argument though, that Barkley wasn't even the best Chuck on his own team. Chuck Person was arguably better at Auburn.

Why not? I'll take that team and win some. Yeah, I know, blue shades. Of course. I don't disagree. If I were to be honest, it would take too much time and I don't have it to give at this moment. Just having fun. But I bet those guys could win some games!

Might be best to make some all decade teams. To tough to pick all time for me.
But any team without Kenny Walker on it it a big mistake.

I know that's a common perception but go watch Jabbar, Malone, Gilmore, Dawking etc. Issel played against them most of his career and into his late 30's and averaged 20 a game at 6-9. He's one that could play in any era because of his skills. Watch some tapes.

That's a pretty strong list. Might go Chuck Person over Jeff Malone and add Kyle Macy if they needed a true point guard for that team. People forget Kyle was a three time all American and 3 time All SEC and the first UK player to be consensus SEC player of the year. Was up for National player of the year twice. I think Chris Collingsworth got SEC overall athlete of the year and said he would have voted for Kyle

Guess it depends on if your list is based on just college career or overall.

Excellent list. But Arkansas was in the Southwest Conference at the time Sydney Moncrief starred for them.

Dan and I were teammates he is one of the all time leading scorers in NBA history he holds the UK career scoring and rebounding record without a 3 point shot The Horse could play today hands down

The OP lost me when he put Barkley at SF. I know his height was SF, but absolutely nothing about his game in SEC play was SF, he played C but I'm ok with you moving him down 1 position, but not 2.

I am only going to consider players I've seen play, or maybe in my lifetime (but I'm sure I'll miss several from the 70's).
First my candidate list off the top of my head (I'm sure I'll forget some):
Issel, Davis, Mashburn, Wall, Davis, K.Walker, Cousins, Bowie, King, Lofton, McCaffrey, Williamson, Thurmon, Barkley, C.Person, O'Neil, C.Jackson, Wilkins, Maravich, Ellis, Houston

PG: Maravich
SG: C.Jackson
SF: Mashburn
PF: Barkley
C: Davis

You can make a case for most any of the above to start.

i certainly think Bob Pettit has to make the All-Time All-SEC team . . . but what about BAILEY HOWELL? Consensus First-team All-American as a senior. Consensus Second-team All-American as a junior. Three-time All-SEC first team. Averaged 27.1 ppg for his college career; led Mississippi State to their first-ever SEC Championship.

Here's a part of the Wikipedia squib on Howell's career at MSU: "Despite playing at the college level for only three years, Howell set and still holds MSU records for single-game points scored, career scoring average, single-season and career free throws made, single-season and career free throws attempted, single-game free throw percentage, single-game rebounds, single-season rebounds, career rebounds, and single-season and career rebounding average." (All scoring records WITHOUT the 3-point rule.)

Twelve years in the NBA. Second overall pick in the 1959 NBA draft (Pistons). Two NBA Championships (Celtics). Six-time NBA All-Star. In his first six seasons in the NBA, he averaged a double-double.

Quite a player. No doubt about that !

If you are talking just college-playing days, it would be hard to have a team without Chris Jackson, Pistol Pete, and Shaq in the top 12.
Give me 9 of UK's best players plus those three and I'll take on any team you want.

Maravich, Shaq, Pettit are on list. Bernard King and Charles Barkley are on list.
UK has best teams but not best players.
I could name 3 other players not named UK on back that are better.
In my mind.
Anthony Davis is number 1, Dan Issel is number 2, 3 Jack Givens due to scoring 41 in Championship game is next,4. Mash, and throw in all of Cal's players to get best players ever in UK jersey.

I could make an all time SEC team, but I think an all UK team could be just as good. I am only doing players from my time of watching.

PG John Wall, Rajon Rondo
SG Tony Delk, Derek Anderson
SF Jack Givens, Ron Mercer
PF Jamal Mashburn, Chuck Hayes
C Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins

Rex Chapman, Kenny "Sky" Walker

You have loads of defense, shooting, athleticism, shot blocking, rebounding, and heart. I don't think you could go wrong with this group. Sure you could probably swap out a player or two, but overall I would love this team. I think it would be interesting to do an all time SEC vs all time UK. Maybe match things up by players from the same eras.

Showing my age, but Neal Walk has to make a list somewhere. He averaged 27pts and nearly 20 rebounds one year.

Throw in Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell and Oscar Robertson as well. Those guys could play then, now or 50 years from now. Humans have not evolved physically in the last 50 years. They young pups on here just never saw some of the dudes back then play.
BTW....AD's wingspan is 89 inches.....Wilt's wingspan was 92 inches. Let that sink in.
