Dortch only played 75 minutes last season, primarily at the 5, all in conference. Compared to the other centers in conference play he appeared to have more energy on defense but fouled way too much. In his 75 minutes, he had 17 fouls, while Ogbole had 18 fouls in 158 minutes, Martini had 21 fouls in 316 minutes, and Somerville had 54 fouls in 476 minutes.
On the plus side Dortch had 4 steals and 6 blocks in 75 minutes which matched Ogbole’s blocks and steals in 158 minutes, was arguably better than Martini’s 5 steals and 2 blocks in 316 minutes and almost as many as Somerville’s 9 steals and 8 blocks in 427 minutes.
Such low block and steals numbers from the center position were a big reason Rutgers interior defense was so bad last year. At least Dortch shows some potential on the defensive end and is one reason it is good to have him back.
