Akron / Rush O and D

Akron has one of the worst rush defenses and offenses in the country. If Nebraska struggles at all in either fashion against them, then there is definitely some big deficiencies. I could see Emmett Johnson hitting 200 this next week if he's allowed to.

Cincinnati has played some "decent" teams tough and it was week 1 while also having a new D Coordinator, so I will give some slack.

2 weeks to fix issues. Still more positives than negatives so far.

This game is sort of a lose-lose type of game.

Unless NU just comes out and wins 52-0.

I think its a win in week 2 and 3 in the aspect of cleaning up the rotations. As long as they take care of business, which I think they will in these 2.
Yeah we need some of that Akron and Houston Christian meat so we can paper over what we already know are weaknesses.

Pretty much what it will be!

Then for some reason will be shocked when the Michigan QB runs for 150 yards and 3 TD's against us.

We will be 3-0 heading into the Michigan game. Glad it is at home. But I fear Michigan will beat us soundly unless our defensive line improves and Raiola can find open receivers. You can dunk and dunk all the way to the red zone, but our lack of a consistent running game will kill us in the red zone against Michigan.

Who will be shocked?
Still think we could beat Mich but I fully expect the young qb to run well against the Blackshirts.

Look, despite all the ******** that was slung regarding the positivity coming into this game - we all KNOW this isn't yet a playoff caliber team. Or anywhere close to it. Big surprise (no). We got to 1-0 and we need to get way better. I'm really looking forward to taking this season one game at a time and hopefully improving. This was a big win, even though most won't see it that way.

EJ has to be considered for Big Ten Player of Week: 107 yards rushing and 7 catches. He needs to stay between the tackles, though. He is a shifty runner, but by no means a speedster.

Nebraska has home cooking for two weeks to get ready for it's true test. I think we are going to see the play book open up and some new faces will see playing time which is a good thing. The Cincy game was too important for the coaches to take chances with young players who need game experience, those players will get their chance in the next few weeks. This game was all about veteran's playing in that game against Cincy who by the way was not a bad team. I expect most of us look forward to some fresh young faces getting game experience in the coming weeks after once game is no longer in doubt hopefully.

I don't think NU has enough firepower offensively to hang with other high scoring teams. If either DR or EJ goes down, we are really in trouble offensively unless TJ is the real deal.

I agree, NU is not close to being a playoff caliber team. Teams have too many ways to neutralize those things we do well, and expose the things we don't do well.

It's hard to know how good Cincy is after one game. Their OL and DL are objectively pretty good with a couple guys that will be likely in the NFL. Skill position talent is mediocre and subpar compared to the Big 10. I think they are a 5-7 win team in their conference.

I thought our OL played pretty well but our DL was not up to par to meet the challenge that will be coming against Big 10 programs. The next two games will help with getting the younger RBs reps and opening up the downfield passing game. The health of Keona Davis is a gigantic concern.

Ultimately it was a must win and that is by far the most important thing going into next week.

I mean, I just don't know yet. Be very careful of concluding too much about our offense at this point after one game. I think DR is a lot better than last year and there's no question that our WR's are better. I still think this could be an explosive offense at some point. I was almost sick when I saw DR's arm on the replay where he got stripped from behind. But, I think if the worst happens that Lateef can probably be as good as what DR was last year. Maybe better? He's a legit prospect.

The fact is nobody really knows how good or bad Cincy is, nobody really knows how good or bad Nebraska will become. We will find out these questions in the coming weeks and the muddy waters will clear up then we can have better conversations about this season.

I always love it the next day when we start to say things like "You know, Cincy might be a lot better than anyone thought"

They will be lucky to get to 5 wins and there is a good chance they fire their coach.

They are losing to KU, ISU, Okie St, Baylor, Utah, BYU and TCU.

How mobile is their new QB expected to be? A dual-threat QB is a challenge under the best of conditions. And we looked especially vulnerable last night.

We got lucky enough to get a W. We'll take it because we'll need that win to get to a bowl game this year.

Cincinnati looked like the B10 team out there. Bigger and definitely more physical. Each guy on our D-line need to put on about 20-30 pounds. That definitely won't be fixed by the time Michigan comes to town.

Im really not down on the team because this is how I thought this game would go. I also knew replacing Ty and Nash was going to be a problem. Lots of work to do but unfortunately I did not see a playoff team out there. We are a year or two away from that goal if you ask me.

I thought he was supposed to be a big time runner, I might be wrong though.

It will be just another forgotten game, once we have a bad loss...which is almost certainly going to be Michigan. We won't be able to move the ball and stop run against a decent team...the roster just isn't very good, I mean DR is a 5 star, but if we didn't have him...would there be another NFL possibility in the entire top 30 players? Cincinnati seemed more physical, and their QB could run over our safeties...what is the big 10 going to do to us once they see the film?

Yeah, the offense was a real disappointment. Everybody knows the defense is going to be a sieve, but we might get away with it in the big 10, since most offenses are average...but we just aren't going to score with this team and aren't going to stop the run, and aren't going to get off the field. The style of play(boring as hell), will keep the games close but we will get beat consistently in league this year. Rhule is just good enough to keep getting a paycheck, and a good enough preacher to keep the kids playing poorly but hard enough that we don't end up with a 2 win season. Definition of purgatory for the next two years...

We threw 65 million guaranteed at the guy... year 3...we should expect him to at least compete for top 12. Cally, Bo, Riley all were in the top 20 by year 3. Last years team had the talent left over from Frost to make the playoff...we lost four games to beatable opponents, including the eventual national champion, and only had one sure loss. The talent was wasted on two buddy coaches who he refused to fire, and now the team is even worse after losing two of their best coaches. Mediocrity is worse than bottoming out and getting rid of preacher Rhule. I might be on board, if our only talented player(DR) wasn't guaranteed to leave after this year. He was a two year rental.

W….t…..f…. Talent left over from Frost? Holy ****.
2 year rental? 1st of all he needs to be in college for 3 years, 2nd of all, all players are essentially a 5 year rental.

I don’t even know why I’m replying to this.

I'm not sure Nebraska has any players on O or D that could start for Michigan. Your fears are justified, hopefully Nebraska doesn't get clocked like they did a few years ago.

Right now, based on the incomplete picture drawn from one game, my gut says we are going to get killed by Michigan. Games are won in the trenches. And both of our lines looked very, very mediocre against Cincinnati. And Michigan has skill position talent that outstrips our talent. Their only weakness is they are starting a true freshman at QB. What do you want to bet that we make him look like Tom Brady?

My guess is Nebraska had a very vanilla offensive game plan, they didn’t want to give Cincinnati a short field with a turnover although Rhule did that by going for it instead of punting. Hopefully they’ll start opening the play book each game. My concern is dylan
can find open receivers when the opponent is in a zone or has enough time. The defense will probably be ok if we don’t play against Mobile quarterback. They need to correct the bad angle and possibly sit singleton play. Someone else who isn’t afraid to tackle
