I had a root canal a number of years ago (on the tooth next to a front tooth) and following that, a few years later, even had surgery to remove part of the bone, in 1982.

Now, every time I drink a beer, I develop a small swollen area on my gum, like an abscess, which goes away a couple hours later. Does this sound "normal?" What is going on?

I'm not a dentist, nor do I even like you, but you should get that checked out. Reason being, I chipped my two front teeth about 45 years ago, and since then have had multiple crowns, as well as root canals. A year ago, I had like a blister on the gum, and it would come and go. Eventually, the dentist noticed it during a six month checkup, and low and behold, I had an infection, which eats away the bone. Went to a surgeon and got it painfully scraped out, but it came back, so I ended up having to have dental implants, with the surgeon basically redoing the bone that was lost due to the infection. In fact, just finishing up the process, and will get the new teeth on the implants next week. Bad news is that implants on the front teeth are the worst to get done, due to that part of the mouth being the most sensitive. Worst news is that each one cost me about $5,600.00.

No, sounds like you had an apicoectomy. That's where they lay a flap, above or superior to the tooth, remove the bone to expose the root tip. The doctor then proceeds to remove the tip of the root and back fill the canal with a certain material. called ProRootMTA, great stuff. We then suture the tissue back down. Sounds like you have an abscess. I would see an endodontist for a followup. I use to do them but stopped. If it has abscessed after the surgery, you may have to have an extraction and an implant. Was it a specialist who did it the first time? I've done a few over the last 38 years and you don't have to be a specialist to do them but I never did one past the canines.

I wouldn't say they are the most sensitive, the bone in the maxilla, upper arch, is not the most dense. Implants change the way dentist approach treatment. Sometimes it's just better to stop and go with the implants before things get bad with bone loss.

That's been in place since 1982? That's a long time. I'm headed out from the office and I can discuss some more later this evening. I would bet that if your apico was done that long ago, the filling material was amalgam and you have a blue tattoo, we call it an amalgam tattoo, above the tooth. Did you have a crown put on it? You might have a root fracture. I would think that you would have a swelling at other times instead of just when you drink beer! Not sure where you live but I have a classmate who's an endodontist in Charleston. One in Huntington.

I swear, it only happens after I drink a beer. A small swollen place appears on my gum above my tooth, like an abscess. There is no pain, just kind weird.....and it goes away in a couple of hours.

I had one of those procedures. Hurt a lot after the drugs wore off.

Yeah, and the damndest thing, my throat was sore. The doc called the next evening and asked if I was doing okay (super impressed) and I told him my throat was sore. He said that was from the tube they stuck down my throat.

What kind of beer do you drink? Might be cheaper and less painful to change brands. But....in all seriousness.....maybe you are allergic to certain beers. I actually get a allergic reaction when I drink certain hard liquors.

Probably due to the dentist not the procedure. I've had 5 and still working well. Did you get the crowns done after the procedure?

I had an apico and then went out and played golf. My lip swelled up like some movie makeup horror story.

Doesn’t matter, it happens on PBR and happens on expensive German, hand crafted beers. My usual go to is Fat Tire.

Interesting. I might have to ask some of the older endodontist if they had ever done it that way. I would get a consult with an endodontist cause if there's problem, you want to ctach it before a lot of bone is lost. Do you live in wV?

I have an allergy to brewer's yeast. It makes my throat sore. I'd hazard a guess that it's not a local reaction just superior to a tooth that has had a previous endodontic treatment.

I've stayed away from alcohol and tobacco my entire life. My entire family has been affected by one or the other, not for me. I occasionally get frisky and change from water to flavored water.......[thumbsup]
