Success breeds contempt? Brutal article about Fitz linked below. Perhaps a few small kernels of truth re: players rights, but mostly bashing for the sake of bashing. I have met Fitz on numerous occasions and personally couldn’t be prouder to have him as our coach and leader of men.

The Only Reason You Don’t Hate Pat Fitzgerald is Because Northwestern Football Still Doesn’t Matter
Take it as a source of pride. Illini football is so bad that their writers on Off Tackle Empire would rather write hit pieces on more successful programs than actually analyze their slim chances of winning 6 games this upcoming season. Most of the negative comments are from Beezer07, a Badger fan who thinks Paul freakin' Chryst is more charismatic than Fitz and who is absolutely frustrated with his teams' inability to regularly beat "jNW." He's so salty that Lays uses his tears to flavor salt and vinegar chips.

Success breeds envy. The more we see articles like this, the closer we are to becoming a perennial contender in the B1G, IMO.

We are I believe three games away from a tie on the all time record with illinois. Keep in mind how bad we were in the dark ages, and let that sink in.

Yeah, reality is we're just a nice story to programs like OSU/Michigan/etc. until we beat them more often.

That's when they start to dislike you.

Fans of Iowa/Wisconsin already hate how many times they've lost to us the past 20-25 years.

Chill.... this is intentionally a joke article. The OTE writers all take turns taking a shot at their rival's team when it is that team's "week" (they cycle through all the teams over the course of the offseason).

This should neither be a source of pride nor a source of stress for anyone. It's just satire, so relax - either enjoy it, or don't bother reading it.

It's not particularly good satire (hey, we can't all be The Onion), but yeah, there is no reason for us to have much of a reaction to this.

Yeah I've read some of this guy (Thump's) other stuff and this wasn't his best effort. Felt a bit forced. He's usually quite funny. Though more funny perhaps when he's bemoaning the ills of his own team - prob because there is so much good content right now.

There was one good underlying point: Fitz gets something of a free ride nationally because everyone assumes NU can only be bad without him, when really he's the third coach in a row to post respectable results. But the whole thing was kind of disappointing. It feels like we haven't made it when fans of our "archrival" have to force their hatred.

That is a fair point but he posits that Cats fans overlook Barnett, when few do. I think most Cats fans with enough perspective give Barnett, Walker and the institution tons of credit - Barnett started the impossible turnaround, Walker kept things moving forward when many thought everything would fall apart the moment Barnett left. And the institution has made the right hires, and over time has greatly increased its investment and commitment. Fitz deserves lots of credit, but he's been building on what was there, which was nothing until Arnold Weber and Gary Barnett showed up.

Best part about this series is that they go from worst (team) to first, and we were 2nd last.

must be a joke. Fitz has done everything right. His paranoia about fans not showing up is a direct result of losing to sorry teams in September. People lose hope early when you lose to Minnesota State or similar. That said, the article did rightly mention that opposing fans have no problem showing up instead of watching the game on their cell.

The only thing that I think Fitz has failed in is hijacking the program and making it a commercial product. Keeping the fans away from all aspects of the team, including watching at Kenosha, or practice, or anything else unless you pay the big bucks. I lay down the cash so I can go to events, etc., but it was more fun when many of the average fans went to Kenosha on the hill, or spring game, or practice. So, when an institution or program is not 'close by" the intimacy fades.

And charging $600 to get into the golf lots is a joke because few got into the west lot this year as the program horded many spots for $$$ and allotments to non NU fans.

Without question, fitz has made the program into a product by commercializing the whole damn thing. He wants fans in their seats on Saturday. Well, that's not how it works Charlie.

You didn’t enjoy the little no-name shout-out that Fitz gave you on his podcast with @chicagocatfan24 ?

You forgot the OTE punctuation: “writers.”
