I hate to be that guy, but it was written by Steve Goodman. Arlo performed it and made it famous. But if you're giving credit to the song's poetic nature, which is well deserved, that credit goes to Goodman.

Love the song. I make sure to play it at all my gigs....

Goodman was the song writer. Guthrie performed it like The Great American Poem.

To follow up on your comment however there are some artists that cover a song and make it there own

this is earlier possibly the first version of Hey Joe.




Different than the Hendrix version. I would say Hendrix owns it though.

House of the Rising Sun was an old minstrel song that The Animals pretty much made their own.
