A better schedule

Why did we schedule too strong this year OOC as we already play a brutal 20 game conference schedule? Our OOC record is going to kill our tourney hopes! Why are we scheduling neutral site games when we can play every game at the RAC? I’m 1000000% kidding and certain I missed some dumb complaint.

Definitely better OOC schedule. Beyond MSG,2 neutral site games with one at Mohegan Sun and one against a very strong team. Don't have full confirmation of the teams.
Thanks for the info RU72! OOC vs usc at msg in December (supposedly), another neutral game at Mohegan Sun, another neutral game with 1 of these 2 against a strong team. Love it!
(And also love the Super Saturday vs msu even though it’s our turn for it to be a home game as last time at msg vs Michigan it was away game).

So Maybe 2 MSG Neutral site games? MSU in conference and USC (thought someone say this game is off?)
And Mohegan game vs. would guess a Northeast opponent - BC, Rhode Island Bonaventure…just guesses

This is the first year in a while we need an easier schedule probably. Not too concerned with who we schedule but would like to avoid 260+ teams that’s about it.

What's the date of Mohegan? It's not their tip off in November as that field has already been announced.

I defend Pike on recruiting all the time, but I strongly disagree with his decision to never play in the neutral tournies (from a recruiting perspective), The kids like going to places like the Caribbean, Disney, Vegas, Hawaii, etc. to play in those early season brackets. I think you also are allowed an extra game from playing in them.

Does playing in these exotic locations actually help recruiting at all? I wonder if there is any recruiting value in it. The recruits are not on the roster when these games are played.

I don’t know that they were ever invited to those locations… any confirmed invites? These tournaments are competitive to get into. Everyone wants to play them. Covid also had an impact over the last 2 years. They should get some invites now that Pike has a competitive program.

I thought some folks on here said we’ve outwardly indicated we don’t want to be in them. That would mean kids coming here know going in they won’t likely be able to participate in them. Maybe whoever has said that before made it up. I hope so.

We were scheduled to play Baylor in the 2020 Jimmy V Classic (the other game being Gonzaga v. Tennessee) before Covid happened.

I think some folks assumed. Not that I know for sure either but I do know that we weren’t invited in the past. Pike definitely hasn’t pushed for challenging away games but these tournaments are a different story and difficult to get into.

Yes someone posted that pike doesn’t do tourneys. Maybe the mods can comment. You’re also only allowed one every certain number of years as well

That’s not a tourney that your travel to with multiple games in a bracket. It would’ve been a local game. I’m talking about the appeal of traveling to a fun place to play in a mini tournament. It’s a nice experience for kids to do those a few times during a college career. I’m not saying we should do one every year but every few years wouldn’t be a bad idea is all.

The no pre season non conf subject always comes up on scheduling threads. Id guess RU is only power 5 conference team to not participate in one in the last 6 years. I think Vegas was our last destination pre-season tourney, a small 4 team event. Jordan teams played in NIT preseason losing to Drexel so didn’t advance to MSG, and legends game at Barclays Vanderbilt and Virginia. 2011 also played in Cancun vs illinois St and Richmond I think.

Yup that’s the thing. There are so many of these tournies - it’s almost impossible that we’re not getting invited to any unless we’re not putting our name in the hat. They don’t all have top tier teams in them. Even if we played in a lower end one - the trip would be a good early bonding experience.

RU and the Jimmy V Classic never actually said that we had ever accepted an invitation in 2020. It was widely speculated but never confirmed.

Last years Gotham classic was supposed to be at MSG with Pitt vs St John's and Iona vs Seton Hall. I think SHU had a covid pause and could not participate and it turned into just 1 stand alone game.

The listing for all of those teams in all of the tournaments make me sad that we are pretty much rarely in any of them.

I hope that does change in the years to come because I would like to personally travel to all of them.

Best of Luck,
Groz

Same - purely selfish reasons for wanting a destination tournament.

I could easily talk the wife into a weekend getaway around a Rutgers basketball tournament.

Looks like the Gotham Classic has spots open. Already has St. Bonnie & ND. Seems like it would be a good landing spot for RU

RU is in discussions. Not likely to sign on but it could happen. My source is a family member who is involved in the discussion.
