A couple of years ago, I think even before we had the CFP, I had a playoff post where the existing bowls would be the playoff bowls with eight teams. 5 of the P5 Conference Champs, 2 G5 Conference Champs using the highest ranked or best record to make the selection and 1 At-Large bid that would accommodate Notre Dame or BYU or other independent or another G5 Champ if they qualify. Rose Bowl would get the Champs from the Pac12 vs. B1G match-up they like, so it keeps tradition and sets a playoff spot for one of the Final Four. Orange Bowl would get the Champs from the ACC vs. Big Xii. Sugar Bowl would be the SEC vs. a G5 Champ. Fiesta Bowl would get the Independent/G5 vs. the other G5. It might be best if some of the champs move around or let the Bowl committee make the selections from the 8 qualifiers, I don’t know which is best, but it could be worked out. Once these bowls are complete, and they would all be New Year’s Day or eve, your Final Four goes to a neutral site; either Indy’s dome, Atlanta’s dome, Jerry World or AZ and you have one day when all four play. Seed them as #1 plays #4 at 1pm and #2 plays #3 at 7pm. Then once you have the finalists, use the Rota of the major bowls to hold your championship game. I know, now it is a +2 system. But if the FCS schools can do it, why not FBS?
