Extremely difficult to rank soccer teams

Preseason it is difficult to accurately rank them...by midseason it is fairly easy to at least put them in to two column: contenders and those building to become them.
As for a numbered rank, you can peg that, but it takes a lot of knowledge of all teams involved. No matter what it will be subjective as heck.
