Hard to believe this was 45 years ago. I remember it like it was yesterday. My wife and I were at her grandmother's home watching her and I watched the game in her living room. it didn't look good when Pete Malloy went to the foul line but he missed the one in one after Tom Young had called a time out to ice him. Mike Dabney grabbed the rebound and the game was over. We were 28-0 going into that game and that was one huge scare. Princeton under Pete Carril was outstanding for so many years. We had defeated Princeton at Jadwin during the regular season when we broke the game open in the last 5 minutes and we won 75-62 when they were rated # 17 in the country.
I was there!..fans got their money's worth that day, as UCONN won a close one over Hofstra in next game.
We stayed again at the Providence Marriott for the 1989 NCAA game against Iowa, and Carrill had breakfast at the table next to us..they played in the evening session in that classic near upset of #1 Georgetown
Yes, was thinking about, but did not, go up to Carril at breakfast that morning and ask how Malloy missed that free throw 13 years earlier...
Carril came close to pulling off monumental upsets in ‘76 & ‘89, but he finally got one defeating defending champion UCLA in the ‘96 Tournament!
