VHSL Announces 2025 Class 3 All-State Softball Team

New Kent's Hannah Tober selected Class 3 Player of the Year; Broadway's Becky Cantrell named Class 3 Coach of the Year

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — The Virginia High School League announces its 2025 Class 3 all-state softball team. New Kent senior shortstop Hannah Tober is the Class 3 Player of the Year, and Broadway head coach Becky Cantrell is the Class 3 Coach of the Year.

Tober put together one of the most impressive batting slash lines in VHSL history this season of .635 AVG/.710 OBP/1.311 SLG. She led New Kent in every batting category with 47 hits in 74 AB, 13 doubles, two triples, 11 home runs, 18 walks (11 intentional), 45 RBI, and 47 runs scored. In the postseason, the University of Virginia signee was nearly unstoppable with a slash line of .889 /.933/2.778 SLG, along with eight hits in nine at-bats, three doubles, a triple, four home runs, 10 RBI, 12 runs, and 10 bases on ball (9 intentional). For a career, she slashed .508/.596/.932, finishing with 158 career hits, 21 homers, 132 RBI, and scored 144 runs. Her 54 career doubles are the most in VHSL history, while her 144 runs are seventh all-time, and her 132 RBI are ninth all-time.

A three-year captain, Tober earned first-team Bay Rivers District and all-region honors four straight years and POY honors. She led New Kent to four district, four Regional, and one state title, along with three state semifinal appearances and an 88-14 career record. Off the field, Tober was her class's Salutatorian, finishing with a 4.6 GPA, and plans to attend medical school.

With over 200 career wins, four Valley District championships, two conference and two regional championships, Becky Cantrell finished her 17th season at Broadway leading the Gobblers 23-4 record and the school's first-ever softball championship with a 4-3 win over Turner Ashby in the Class 3 finals. For the third straight season, her Gobblers reached the state tournament, losing in the quarterfinals in 2023 to Cave Spring and in 2024 losing to eventual state champion Christiansburg. Over that span, her teams have compiled a 59-19 record with a .756 winning percentage.

The all-state softball team consists of three pitchers, one catcher, four infielders by position, three outfielders, and one DP. Only those players selected as first-team all-region players are eligible for selection to the all-state team. The all-state selection committee comprises eight coaches, with two from each region.
