With Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey leaving for the NBA this team will need players to step up. Obviously one of the reasons this team is so low in the Big Ten standings is who will step up and how good they will be is TBD.

Having seen a single practice, I feel I am in a unique position to wildly extrapolate an extremely small sample size into projected results throughout the season including Big Ten competition. But to make my analysis more accurate I will take into account what Pikiel has said or implied about certain players since it’s well known he isn’t prone to wild exaggerations or hyperbole.

With that being said Darren Buchanan is probably the most likely player to be MVP. Physically he seems like a taller Ron Harper. He supposedly is one of the team’s best defenders and had previously scored at almost 20 points per game. He has had issues with injuries.

The next most likely player is Dylan Grant. Last year he struggled early missing 9 straight shots including if my memory is correct a dunk and a lay-up. However he has gotten steadily better and appears confident offensively showing the ability to put the ball on the floor and shoot off the dribble with a much better stroke. He also is tall, quick and agile, which suggests he could be a decent rebounder and defender. However at the dinner after the practice Pikiel got on Grant’s case for not rebounding up to his potential.

Chris Nwuli may have a shot at becoming the team’s defensive player of the year. Without mentioning names Pikiel suggested one of the new players coming in has the potential to be another McConnell. Based on how Pikiel described Buchanan and Nwuli it could be either one. Offensively Nwuli finished around the basket but made none of his threes so based on the small sample size 1 or 2 shots from 3, I can only conclude that he will be a horrible 3 point shooter.

Both the European players have really nice strokes on their shots and could also surprise us and become the next Cam Spencer. That is very unlikely, but at this point who knows.

Finally, I have to mention Tariq Francis, I don’t think he has a chance to be MVP based on his stats at NJIT, but gosh darn it, he scored at will during the practice and looked really smooth offensively!

I wasn’t able to make the practice. How did the two Euro’s look? From reading the tea leaves, I would guess Zrno is a starter but might not be the leading scorer he was originally billed as. Maybe 2nd or 3rd in points. And Badalau may be a bit better than originally thought. Maybe the 6-7th rotational player coming off the bench.

Well anything better than finishing second to last in the conference is better than the preseason predictions and we can only hope we do the opposite of last year where we finish better than predicted

Both Zrno and Badalau have really nice shooting strokes. During the drills when they took an open 3 they made an awful lot of them. During the scrimmages they weren’t passed the ball enough to get a good feel for how well they will shoot in a game. In games they could help spread the floor as opposing teams will not want to leave them open.

I think that JMike is flying under the radar as a team leader here. I doubt his stats will be good enough to be considered an "MVP" type of player since he probably won't score enough, but if he continues the progression he made last year as a steady guy who can defend, dish, won't turn the ball over needlessly (he had one of the best A/TO ratios in the conference), and has an improving offensive game, he can be a good glue guy in the backcourt and one of the leaders of the team.

Totally agree with everything you said about JMike. My biggest concern with him is that if he tries too hard to be the star his inability to finish effectively in traffic at the rim will hurt the team. He shot 40% (10 of 35) from 3 in Big Ten competition so that and his assist to turnover ratio suggests that he will be solid guard. But as you said, his stats should be solid but won’t quite be at MVP level!

I could be wrong but it feels like we've heard before that JMike excels in practice/scrimmages... and then we all know what we get in the games. Fingers crossed his decision making has improved this season

He was an improved player last year with an excellent Assist to Turnover Ratio.
I meant more about the continuous issues finishing at the rim. You're right that he was better last year.

I think for us to have a somewhat successful season he's gonna need to be the MVP. Hopefully he takes that next step.

Actually, I think JMike was one of the better players last year that wasn’t named Harper or Bailey. In Big Ten play he shot 41% from the field, but a very good 40% from 3. He hit 71% of his free throws and had 31 assists, 18 steals, 3 blocks and only 12 turnovers. Hard to tell how he will do with more usage, but if he can hit 3s at a 40% rate with higher usage, he should keep taking them. I don’t want to see him play hero ball or drive to the rim in traffic because I don’t think he has the necessary physical and basketball skills to do that effectively.

Small sample size on the 3's at 1.25 per game but I guess some reason for hope.

J'Mike is a serviceable backup, maybe 8-10 minutes, not a starter in the A-10, let alone the Big 10. He'll be exposed playing as a starter--can't shoot consistency, opposing D's will sag, is overrated as a defender, can't always stay in front of opponents, and is small (6'2" max). It's like RU starting Juel Wiggan 20 years ago.

Anyone who believes he is not a starter in the A-10 is a down right moron.
