Beggars can't be choosers, but can't we just find a 6'4" or 6'5" shooting guard who can defend well?
I consider both of those mid-major programs.
On the upside both of those programs are known for recruiting tough guys who defend.
On the downside Mick Cronin doesn't exactly have a reputation for recruiting shooters.
Cincy and Xavier are mid major programs ?
Like I said, I consider both of those mid-major programs. I'm sure that I'm in the minority on this. Due to previous conference membership they're both kind of imprinted in my mind as MM programs.
Perhaps a better description of Cincinnati is: HM program in a MM conference. Same for UCONN and Memphis.
By my count those mid majors have gone to the Dance a combined 38 times since our last appearance, with 11 sweet 16 's, 4 elite 8's and a final 4. If he has offers from these mid majors that's good enough for me.
Interested to hear if you have seen him play? What makes you think he cannot shoot?
Villanova and Rutgers are definitely HM programs.
I have seen Sheppard play with his AAU team but not in a HS game. He is an okay shooter. Btw, Team Loaded used him as a 2G, but his HS team used him at point guard.
If I recall, most of Sheppard's offers were from schools like Miami (OH), Old Dominion, Missouri State and a few mid-majors in North Carolina.
When he selected UCF, he was down to them and Missouri State, Old Dominion and UNC-Wilmington. So Cincinnati and Xavier probably slow played him or backed off.
A former UCF staffer told me that they thought they had a steal in Sheppard because he could play in their league.

Looks good to me. Athletic with a good shooting touch. Wish he was taller but if Coaching staff wants him then I hope we get him.
If we get him, we'll have one guard who favors going left (Sheppard) and another who almost always goes right (Sanders).
Sheppard gets his shot off quickly. I like that.

But one could certainly argue that, despite recent success, it is by definition a mid-major league. Whatever the term means, it certainly doesn't mean what you people are trying to imply, that it has to do with the level of the success of the program. Some schools are having their names tagged or associated to the player from the players camp, when they know there is a gap or open roster spot at that particular position.....the school on the other hand actually benefits from having been mentioned with a player, since they ultimately don't want their fan bases appearing that they are asleep at the wheel or are not involved with an available player. The last thing a school like RU, SHU or others that may have a need a guard wants to see is their name not associated with an available player that could land at another school you play each year.
The key is whether there is enough of a relationship with the staff, AAU contacts or some track record recruiting to that area. I tend to think the bulk of this "interest" is coming from the players side, more than the schools that may ultimately decide they want to recruit the player.
