A look at the 2013 boys volleyball season
The Top 5
1. Deep Run: The Wildcats return eight players from last year, when they finished 16-4 and won a spot in the Central Region tournament. Key players are Matt Barnett and junior middle Craig Nelms.
2. Patrick Henry: Four of the Patriots’ six seniors have been on the varsity for nearly their entire high school careers, making Patrick Henry one of the most experienced teams in the Central Zone this season.
3. Midlothian: The Trojans had a decent 2012, finishing four games above .500. However, Jack Speers’ team will be experienced, with five returning senior starters. The group will be led by Neal Martin.
4. Douglas Freeman: The Rebels advanced to the state semifinals last season and must replace many of their starters, including setter Dylan Hicks. Freeman returns All-Metro libero Micah Buller and is one of the better defensive teams in the Central Zone.
5. James River: Despite losing four-year setter Mitchell Ford, the Rapids are senior laden, albeit inexperienced. The Rapids may take some bumps early on as the team grows, but could be in the hunt at season’s end.

A look at the 2013 girls volleyball season
The Top 5
1. Atlee: The Raiders came within one point of beating Kellam for the state title a year ago and lost 2013 All-Metro player of the year Hailey Brooks and first-team selection Karlie Suber to graduation. Atlee will look to its leadership and depth to fill the void.
2. Mills Godwin: Mills Godwin only lost one starter and returns senior All-Metro setter Brady Brown and senior Laura Devlin, a second-team outside hitter. Mackenzie Brewer also returns for the Eagles, who are in the very competitive Conference 11.
3. Lee-Davis: After a surprise run to the Central Region final last season, the Confederates are poised to have another good season. The squad returns junior setter Jordan Martin and senior outside hitter/middle Chelsea Matthews. Lee-Davis lost four starters, so replacing that experience will be crucial.
4. St. Catherine’s: The reigning LIS champion enters 2013 having lost two starters. Senior outside hitter Alaina Wibberly and junior setter Mady Arles, both all-LIS selections, return along with senior middle Caroline Naumann. The Saints need to shore up their backline and find a solid libero.
5. Cosby: The Titans were upset by Lee-Davis in the 2012 region tournament, falling 21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-14. All-Metro first-team selection Gabby Holt graduated, leaving a hole at outside hitter that Cosby needs to fill to make a statement in Conference 3. However, the Titans return four starters, including seniors Sarah Schriner (middle), Paige Gauman (outside hitter) and Caitlyn Aird (libero), all of whom bring solid leadership and experience.
