2: Worse off more than likely, Pruitt is as dumb as a stump and he wouldn't get the coordinators or the talent here that he has there. All of those Mullen years where we went bowling and they sucked, they still kept out recruiting us and taking recruits from us from time to time.

I’ve gotten it before using Firefox app on iOS. But I’ve had to close the tab and app to get out of it.

Pruitt who knows probably depends on who he brought as oc back then. He started out pretty rough at Tennessee. Playing more respectable now but still couldn’t beat uga and probably won’t beat Florida either.

I’m no Pruitt fan. But we haven’t exactly played the packers and Chiefs

Instead of hiring Pruitt... where would we be if we hired Scott Satterfield instead of Sloppy Joe?

Here's another - We'd be 3-0 had we hired Napier instead of Leach.

I love Cohen - but unless Leach adapts, Cohen hired us a 8 win (over 12 games) ceiling coach.

Hard to say what Pruitt would be looking loike now. We would have had a much better 2018. And that's not because I think he's particularly good, but he's good enough taht he could have not 17ed up the very good situation Mullen left. He just would have had to hire a competent spread OC and we'd have won 10 games his first year. 2019 would have depended in part on him filling holes on the OL and DL that Mullen left, which is the one thing Moorhead actually did a good job of. If we don't have tutor gate, that changes things a lot obviously, but I'm not sure that was really a Moorhead thing. But we went 6-6 being soft as baby **** and with a terrible offense, so I think he probably could have gotten us to 8 wins. After that, it's just a question of what recruiting would have looked like. Our roster at this point would look very different, so it's hard to say where we'd be. I think we'd be better off at the moment, but I would not be as optimistic about the future.

It’s pretty apparent that a lot of people’s perception of Tennessee football is based on nothing more than what they were 25 years ago and dumbass recruiting rankings. We put 9 more players in the NFL than Tennessee did over the past 10 years. They have not outrecruited us for a long, long time.

Mullen was an 8 win ceiling coach himself, for the most part. Won more than 8 just once in 9 years, with a generational QB and a pretty friendly schedule that particular year. Unfortunately, that’s likely to be as good as it will ever be here, so if Leach gets to where he hits the 8 win ceiling year after year, or at least averages 7 ~ 7.5 wins per year like Mullen did after getting the program through the Air Raid learning curve, then I think you have to call that hire a success.

1. I know people love to make fun of Spam but its pretty good fried out on toast with some mustard and onions.

2. Pruitt wouldn't be at State in 2020 if we'd hired him in 2018, one way or another

Cohen's logic was that hiring a passing guru coach (both Moorhead and now doubling down on it with Leach) would take us beyond that 8 win ceiling. He wanted to beat Bama. He saw how Clemson did it and did what he felt was the right thing for MSU, which is (allegedly) an innovative passing offense. So, in that vein, if we're just an 8 win team, we have failed.

He's known for overthinking things. We'll see if this works out. I personally think we had the right blueprint with Mullen, we were just lacking a little bit better recruiting. I mean ****, Raekwon and AJ Brown alone (2 prospects in our backyard) would have probably delivered us an SEC title game berth in 2017 and 2018 both.

Either way, we're in this for the long haul.

Sorry. But Mullen left us with 8 wins as the expectation, not the ceiling. Mullen got to 8 regular season wins 5 times in 9 seasons (and 7 wins twice). Throw out the first year (like we will do with Leach down the road) and you really only have 2016 with the USA loss as the only disappointment across 9 years. Leach already has provided us two disappointments in 3 games.

Ceiling means the absolute maximum you're going to get. Not the norm.

From what I see of Leach, I see an 8 win ceiling and a 6 win norm. Maybe he will figure out that that the playbook he printed on about 4 sheets of feed paper with all those holes on the edges back in 1993 needs updating. Maybe he won't.

And yet, he won more than 8 games 3 times in his tenure here (4 if you count his last season even though he wasn't technically the head coach for the bowl game it was still his team). We had only won more than 8 games twice since WWII when we hired him.

He said over a 12 game schedule. In 2015 and 2010 we only won 8 in the regular season.

How was 8 wins the expectation when he only averaged 7.3 wins even if you throw out Year 1 (7.1 wins if you include it)? And also, the 2012 team which did win 8 games was probably the worst team he ever put on the field for us. We just had a ridiculously easy schedule and got our damn asses kicked by anyone with a pulse.

I’m not sure that it was ever Cohen’s stated goal to “hire a passing guru so we can beat Bama”, in either case. That was the fanbase narrative, but the facts don’t back it up.

When Mullen left, the first offer we made was to Ryan Day, who was just a carbon copy of Mullen from the Meyer tree. When he turned us down, we moved onto Pruitt / Moorhead. It will never be known if Cohen chose Moorhead over Pruitt straight up, or if Pruitt slow played us while waiting out UT and we moved on. In any case, Moorhead was at best the 2nd choice and was possibly the 3rd choice on Cohen’s list.

When Moorhead was fired, the obvious first choice was Napier who has also been a run-centric / balanced offense coach throughout his career....far from an “air it out” guy. The 2nd choice was Judge who would have run who the hell knows what, then finally we got into Leach and Sarkisian after that.

In both cases, the passing-centric coaches were the fall backs to a certain extent, not the primary option.

What win total (reg season) did Mullen finish on the most? Hint - the answer is 8. Hence, the expectation.

Even if you weren't in the know, the facts absolutely back it up. The results are right there.

Pruitt and Judge? Cohen liked the recruiting potential there, yes. But he had a direction he wanted to go. Others aren't really worth mentioning. Going after Ryan Day, for MSU football, is the equivalent of going after Schlossnagle or McDonnell. It wasn't happening, but you throw plans out the window and at least make them say no. Napier was there to be had, and we didn't hire him.

What? Ryan Day, a dude who was a position coach when we offered him and had never been a head coach or even a coordinator, was in no way equivalent to head coaches with decades of HC experience. A more accurate comparison would have been Andy Cannizaro, the up and coming hotshot assistant that we could buy low and then watch his stock rise. But, Meyer nipped that in the bud with the OC promotion and likely some not so discreet info that he would be next in line at OSU, and that was enough to get him to stay put.

And Napier was not “there to be had”, he turned us down....somewhere between once and several times. He wants USCe and will likely get it.

So if he won 8 games in 5 years and went 0-12 the other 4 years, the “expectation” would be 8 wins? That logic makes no sense.

No. But when the other 4 years are 10, 7, 7, and 6.... the expectation is 8.

Do you not know what the word ceiling means in this context? How can 8 be the ceiling if you got to 10?

This **** is not 17ing complicated.

You are moving the goalposts. First you said a 12 game schedule, but now you are saying “7, 7, and 6” to try and bolster your argument when those numbers were actually 6, 6, and 5 (with another 5 that you threw out in Year 1). The fact is that you could change the result just a couple of individual plays in single games from the 9 years of Mullen’s tenure, and he’d have just as many 5 win seasons as 8 win seasons. That proves how silly it is to use the most frequently occurring record as the expectation.

And I understand what a ceiling is. And I think Leach is just as capable as Mullen is to hit 9 or 10 wins just once in an entire decade or two when he has a Top 5 NFL QB and just three Top 25 teams on the whole schedule. It took all of that for Mullen to get there. I personally would call that more of an anomoly than a ceiling, because those two things may not ever line up for MSU again over the next 100 years. A lot of coaches way worse than both Mullen and Leach could have achieved the same results with Dak and that schedule.
