Also, MSDH posted total number of tests for first time today (public and private)

https://msdh.ms.gov/msdhsite/_static/14,0,420.html

From MS Today reporter Erica Hensley:

20,370 tests run. With 1738 cases total, that’s a 9% case rate.

So nationwide MS = 15th highest test rate, 684 tests per 100k people (most in region behind LA); 20th most cases per-capita, 58 per 100k; 32nd highest case-rate (cases out of all tests, could mean we're not just testing sick people); but, still highest hospitalization rate at 29%

Testing isn't consistent though, so take the numbers with a grain of salt. It's getting better within the state but it still varies tremendously across the country.

High hospitalization rate has to be due to preexisting illness (and fatness) of our state, no?

One would think. However our hospitalization rate has been trending down the past few days as the tests pile up, so one would think (hope) it continues to trend towards the mean.

The ones who are being tested must meet the MSDH criteria to be tested which means they must be screened and approved prior too by exhibiting certain symptoms. So that 9% indicated is from the tests where the individuals met the MSDH criteria to be tested. So if you aren't approved prior too then you aren't tested.

Our family member has been in the hospital for 5+ days now. Finally got a positive test. At least the first was negative, not sure how many times they were tested.
This is someone in good shape in their 40s.
