Trey Thompson Playing Time

I would love to hear why people think Trey Thompson is getting such little playing time so far in the season. He did not do much when he got in for the last 4 minutes, but he does look like a good sized 3/4. Hoping whatever it is that he figures out what Ben needs from him as I feel like we are going to need his talent going forward.

It's one game. I wouldn't read into anything that much after just one game.

There was a lot of talk of him being pretty darn good early. Not sure what's going on but you can bet he'll be gone after the season if things don't change

Starting back court was 0-7 from 3. If this keeps up they have to consider moving up Harris or Thompson to play some 2.

Mcollum put up some scoring in 18 minutes but I don’t see how he’s gonna work on defense against legit teams.
We had a LOT of threes go right in the hoop and spin out. Lets see how a couple of games go. The free throws need to be a lot better though......

Totally agree. He hasn't taken to the weight training and gets abused by bigger/stronger 4s. Defense is lacking also.

People I know that have been able to watch Practice have commented “he doesn’t stick out, he is not one the guys you find yourself watching when he is on the floor.”

Little playing time so far in the season?,... We just played our first preseason game and Trey got 4 minutes.

I appreciate this input, and I have no reason to doubt it.

At the same time, following the Oct. 12 scrimmage, at least one beat reporter called Thompson "arguably the best player on the floor" ... LINK

Maybe it was a Heck-at-Kids-Day kind of situation?

I can tell you Payton will do a lot better on D than Trey guarding a 2.

In no world will Trey ever play the 2

Ben was on the record saying he thought the offense was good, the shot making was not. Some nights they go in and some nights they don't. I'm encouraged that Ben didn't seem worried.

Thompson is either not good or not ready. Both are concerning but in no world should Joey M get playing time over him.
Thompson is same age as Ethan Harris and every other freshman. Not saying he’s kris murray talented but Kris came in as a 19 yr old frosh and barely saw the floor. Let’s give kid a little time before we anoint him a bust.

I'm not anointing him a bust but he should get those minutes over a guy like Joey M. Needs to get real reps, not 4 minutes of garbage time.

Well... Obviously if you've listened to some of Bens comments in interviews he has a totally different opinion. Frankly JM was pretty productive in his minutes. Looks like a Wade Lookingbill/Nick Baer type player early in their careers. Glue guy, makes plays, many that don't show up in the box score but help win games.

I know there were some really high level programs that wanted him, but it's not like he was a 5 star, can't miss, prospect. He was a guy with a really good offensive game and nice body that needed to learn how to play defense at a high-major program. And especially for a coach like Ben that stresses defense. How about let's be patient and let the kid develop and let our coach who's a proven winner and a proven developer of players coach his guys without this constant "the sky is falling because a redshirt freshman isn't getting minutes" hand wringing?

Thanks in advance.

Not according to the coach that just took basically a D2/MAC level team to the elite 8 in his first year.
Right and Trey T is not a MAC level player at least in regards to his recruiting profile. Need to see what he has in real game situations over someone who is in fact a MAC level player, especially in a game where the outcome will not be affected. Coach Mac is the best coach in the nation but that does not mean every one of his decisions are automatically correct.

Well when you win 4 national championships and then in your first year picked for near the bottom of the conference make the Elite 8 along with beating Florida most of the time your decisions are correct. half the board was crying about Hauser not getting any playing time last year. If he's lost on defense he isn't going to play. Period. Not sure what to tell you.

🤣
so you have seen him play a total of what, 6 minutes? And came to the conclusion he needs more minutes based solely on his recruiting profile…But you don’t trust the coach who’s seen him in practice for the last year +, and just took us to the elite 8, to make the right decision regarding him?
It’s pretty dam simple, he’ll get more minutes when he earns them.

Okay, so your saying that Ben is the best coach in the nation, but YOU have a better idea then he does which of players 7-11 should be playing and in which situations? If you listened to Bens pressers pre season he had high praise for what JM brings, and he said that he'll be in the rotation this year because of what he brings. Evidently Bens not getting what he wants from TT, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Harris get some of those minutes.

Lol did not say that but good try. I'm saying more highly touted players get more slack and more opportunities. That happens across the board in all of athletics, that's not a secret. Lets not get too deep into this, I think he's the best college coach around but you would be ignorant to think he's immune to making a wrong decision.

Ben isn't your run of the mill coach. He's different. He runs things different and I guarantee you he hasn't made the wrong decision about Thompson based on what he's seen of him in practices over the last year and a half. We'll see him more when he proves to Ben he deserves more. Until then, maybe cheer on those that have made that jump like JM instead of bemoaning those you THINK should see more time.

That’s exactly what makes Ben a phenomenal coach! He isn’t caving on what he demands from the players, based on a kids recruiting profile. Or based on the $ paid to a transfer (Hausen/Folgerous)

NO ONE said he can't make mistakes. I'm sure he'd be the first one to tell you he's made plenty. The only issue here is your saying TT should be getting more PT regardless of what he's done in the program up until now because of his ranking. Pretty much everyone here (including the coaching staff) disagrees with your assessment.
