not to be a smartass in posting ** inserted random internet basketball site and looking up fundamentals of a pick and roll basketball play*** just for kicks and giggles....

It is a point. In fact, it's stuff like this we all talk about every year, it always comes up, and for me, it falls under getting the guys to simply K.I.S.S. when executing, and not getting flashy. In other words, fundamentals.
Make the 100% layup every freaking time, man, don't blow it trying to make a 360 degree dunk. Right? Hit your damn free throws. I can still shoot in the 80's%. Make the smart pass. etc..

but I digress ...

I'm looking at the box score (mindful we were playing Manhattan) from tonight's game ...

we converted 32/60 field goals on 20 assists.
outrebounded them 37 - 21
made 12 three pointers
9-11 free throws
4 blocks
14 turnovers
9 steals

not bad.
keep teaching fundamentals
K.I.S.S. principle.

I agree it should happen. Personally, I think the reason it stands out so much is that our players typically perform proper "set" screens as compared to the absolutely egregious moving screens I see constantly from most team. The constant "hip checks" do just enough to slow the UK defender that it creates either an open driving lane OR shot for the player running off the screen. There should be 20 illegal screens about every half.

TN is usually one of the worst as they often have screeners set screens with their arms extended holding up the defender chasing the player running off the screen.

Sometime it's necessary...but not every ball screen or DHO or screen off the ball is designed to do the same thing. We (HS coach at a large school in MO) have certain actions/looks/sets where we try to get to a twist on a ball screen or DHO. Meaning we are going to come over it, reset it deeper and then come back over the other side. We aren't as concerned with the angle on the first one as much as we are the action on the twist. We also do some stuff on the backside of the action where it looks like a screen, but in all actuality we are just exchanging to keep the help side defenders occupied. All of that to say, some screens are atrocious and some are good. Typically the teams that screen better as a whole are more efficient offensively.

I think it's typically avoided because of the chance of a moving screen violation or an offensive foul. But, yes, way too often our picks appear to be abandoned before the defender is even there.
