The Cold War is over. But the wrestling war is just heating up.
Tulsa Olympic hero Kenny Monday will lead a team of U.S.
freestyle all-stars against the wrestling-rich nation of
Belarus, a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States,
in Tulsa next month.
The event, dubbed the "Bank of Oklahoma USA Wrestles Russia,"
will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 at Oral Roberts

University's Mabee Center.
It will mark the first time that Monday, a 1988 Olympic
gold medalist and 1992 Olympic silver medalist, has wrestled
in his hometown since suiting up for Booker T. Washington
High School in 1980. Monday went on to win a national championship
at Oklahoma State and a world championship in 1989.
He is not the only local attraction, however. There are
so many wrestlers with area ties on the U.S. roster that
the match could just as easily be labeled Oklahoma vs. Russia.
Among Monday's teammates are sixth-place Olympic finisher
Kendall Cross, former OSU wrestler and a member of the Cowboy
coaching staff; and former OSU standouts Chris Barnes, Cory
Baze and Eddie Woodburn. Two current Pokes, two-time NCAA
runner-up Alan Fried and three-time NCAA champion Pat Smith,
are also scheduled to compete.
Mike Gomez, former University of Oklahoma wrestler and currently
an assistant coach at OU, will be joined on the U.S. team
by Sooner wrestler Andy Foster, who placed seventh in the
1992 NCAA Championships.
The "foreigner" on the U.S. roster is super heavyweight
Joel Greenlee of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Greenlee, an international
veteran, is the No. 3-ranked wrestler at his weight class
in the nation.
The Belarus team includes 1992 Olympic champion and 1991
world champion Vougar Orudzev, Olympic silver medalist and
1991 world champion Sergei Smal and veterans Shamil Abdurachmanov
and Alexei Medved. The complete Belarus lineup will be announced
at a later date.
The Belarus team will also face U.S. teams in Las Vegas
(Nov. 9), Portland (Nov. 16) and Tacoma, Wash. (Nov. 18).
