Getting back on top is much less certain than ever before but it's definitely possible. NIL,Portal, make it harder than ever however they also allow for a return in 1 year with the right coach.

If you asked me this post BCG I would say 100% UK will be back on top. Can't say that now with how spread out players are. You can win anywhere now with the right coach and a couple billionaire boosters.

This is Kentucky. The winningest program in college basketball history. We will be back.

Getting Mitch Barnhart the hell out of here was a great first step. Hopefully the mess he made with the basketball program get's cleaned up shortly after this upcoming and absolute stinker of a basketball season is over. (If you can't see what's coming that's on you).

We need to find the basketball equivalent of Will Stein.

It’s still the honeymoon phase with Stein and right now the relations are warm and frequent.
Exactly. Stein is having a magical year. I think he’s the guy but let’s see how the year ends and how we look in the next couple. He’s gonna take some licks at some point. And if he doesn’t the trick will be keeping him here.

It was time for Mitch to go.
But KY is ranked in the Top 25 in all 4 fall/winter major NCAA Sports.
Who gets credit for that?

If we are winning, yes. Winning cures all, look at Football. Find me one fan unhappy right now.
We haven’t lost yet. Won all 3 exhibitions by double digits, have some good looking talent, including the number one player in the portal. You being unhappy about basketball can’t be blamed on this team, they look good.

With our NIL budget and the right coach, we could be great the first year or at least very quickly. It doesn't take 4 or 5 years to rebuild like in previous decades.

If Pope does great this year, then I'll be happy. If he does bad, then at least we get to try someone else. The worst case scenario is mediocrity. I can't deal with many more fringe top 25 teams that might win a game or two in the tournament.

I hope Mark Pope is wildly successful this season. I am optimistic about this team, but concerned about just how competitive we’ll be against good teams.
If we need to make the change, the answer is not far at SLU. I’ve been ringing the bell for Josh Shertz for a while now. If Pope doesn’t perform at Kentucky standard, make the move quickly.
We’ll be battling other big programs for Shertz at the end of the season.

Honestly? Not until our fans get realistic. I don’t think Pope is the guy. That’s clear based on my posting history. I say that because of his career as a coach. However, there was a time our fanbase was labeled “one of the most knowledgeable and passionate basketball fanbases.” Mark Stoops did stuff for the football program that hadn’t happened since the 70s. It wasn’t always pretty of course. Cal won the only championship since the calendar hit 2000. Read this board and you’ll see nothing, but bashing and hatred toward both. I get it wasn’t the best at the end of their tenures, but somewhere along the way the most knowledgeable fanbase has become pretty arrogant and hateful in several ways. It started before Cal left. There were recruits that went elsewhere because other coaches used things said by Kentucky fans online to turn them elsewhere. Ian Jackson at St. John’s went to UNC over UK because of the toxic part of BBN online. The same thing is happening now. Zoom Diallo deleted social media three exhibition games inbecause of it. Exhibition games! He is going to be needed for this team to have success and a lot of the fanbase has already alienated him before a game that counts. You think that won’t be used by opposing coaches recruiting in the portal? It doesn’t matter if Pope continues to coach or someone new. That’s going to be an obstacle.

Have said in several threads about football and basketball, the reasons why UK is able to compete with big boys and have this type of season in football are the same reasons we can slide in basketball. Programs once comfortably below us can beat us.

SEC basketball has never been as deep and talented with players and coaches as it is now.

LSU, Oklahoma, etc have to get used to UK competing with and beating them in football…vice versa in basketball.

Agree with most of that. No doubt we have elements of this fan base who go too far...like most other major programs( especially top football programs). I actually think the positive parts of the fan base aren't celebrated and acknowledged enough now. Like the old days of people camping out for tickets. That was a big story every year that made our fans look great. Selling out games that no other program would sell out. It's just the negative stuff now with social media. I actually think Cal did a good job in his early years of promoting the fans, but that changed in the last half of his tenure. It's all negativity now.

That's true but I've lived through a bunch of UK coaches and this the first time I've ever been satisfied with a football coach.

Calling ******** on that
Oh, since you know so much about me, which football coach was I satisfied with before Stein?

Glad someone gets it - if I'm a UK fan, I hold the responsiblity of being civil, supportive and influencing fans around me to do the same. Not get on this high horse that it's not ok to accept mediocrity.

These aren't prehistoric times anymore, modern era has eliminated the prestige of a being a blue blood, now it's about $$, getting to the NBA and great culture. I stress the culture piece.

Why do so many kids go to Duke? Because that place sells support, during and after basketball. They sell a brotherhood, blah blah. They sell a harmonious supportive community. Hurley puts on the personna that he'd run through a wall for any one of his kids.

If UK goes down into irrelvancy, I'm telling you right now, it's because coaches and kids do not want to play for a high pressured toxic fan base ready to attack you the moment you have a bad game. Who would?

There were idiots here arguing with me that chasing a kid off social media due to an exhibition game was ok. Word spreads fast today, so if you think 18 year olds want to walk into a toxic environment when they have tons of options, think again. And no, other fanbases are not like BBN. This is an expectant, impatient and easily agitated fanbase.

You don't think Mike Malone isn't negative selling a recruit - you want to go play for that fanbase? They'll slip into your DMs saying you suck the minute you have a bad exhibition game.

Next coach is huge. Needs to be a leader, to hold the fanbase to some accountability. A pimple isn't going to work here. If the AD goes to market and no good coaches are biting, you'll know why. The $$ is there, the historic brand is there, the conference is there.

I’ll give you the other 3 sports, but UK MBB should always be well within the top 10, if not knocking on the door of the top 5, year in year out, similar to what Duke and UCONN have been doing, even in the NIL era.

So, to answer your question… Pope gets the credit for that not occurring under his watch.

I’m guessing Oats gets the first call once the season is over. Whether he takes it is another matter.
