UK being played for more cash. Eating from the pig trough is getting old. Wake me up when a star studded recruit beats down the door to play for Pope instead politicking for more money to play for anyone else.
To be fair, what impact does it have if that is what’s happening? All 4 finalists are flying out to see him this week and it’ll be over in a few days anyways.

The same schools are all being used for more cash. The only ones that imo have any real pull to just pick who they want are Duke, UConn, and Cal in the order. The rest are just coming up to the pig trough like Pope.

Honestly when I see these names of recruits I dont have a clue who they are. I dont keep up anymore. If they commit like Hampton I start looking at them more.

But regardless of who they are it would be nice to land two or three top tier freshman so when the portal rolls around you aren't having to go shop for ten players. Hopefully that will allow Pope to focus on his main targets and go snag them.

I think it would help to enter the portal and go after players if you can show them who they will be joining. Kind of hard to go offer somebody when your roster is empty.

Stop making this about Pope, because it's not. I get it, you do not like the guy. This crap is happening everywhere and programs need to adapt and fight back against this garbage.

I know we say they are using UK for a bigger payday and it's true, and it sucks we don't get the top guys, but its not a complete negative. It's good to make other schools overpay.
I get where your coming from but at the end of the day they are getting the player and UK isnt. It feels good to think they overpay and then wont have enough to pay more players but they still do. The money is always there.

We aren't being outbidded these last two years. Players just see what we as fans see. Pope is Pope.

Thought it was a done deal to unc, seems like we come back with the largest offer and now things are less clear (this lines up with the reported pope visit with henry today)

Very interested to see how this ends up
See. Winning Big at Football make us stronger all around money wise and it’s happening already. lol. Joking a little bit but not entirely. Either way, would love to somehow get this kid in Blue and White.

They might “overpay”, but they end up with the players, and at the end of the day, that’s how you win games! Not by being the one used as leverage.

Do you think UNC fans felt that way watching Caleb Wilson?

It’s doesn’t matter if you get the player
That's probably not the greatest example. UNC went nowhere with Wilson and his less than stellar season contributed to getting Hubie D fired while Wilson went on to the NBA and left UNC in the rear view (needing Overtime to beat Charlotte last night under new Coach Mike Malone). I'm sure fans loved having Wilson at the time, but was he worth the bag in the long run?

We could be in a spot to say the same about Milan this year if things go south and Pope gets fired.

That’s what people don’t understand. It’s fine to overpay and get YOUR guy but if that’s at the expense of retention or other guys to build around with then what did you really gain.

Depressing it takes an "over the top" offer for us to get in the conversation.
That was kind of always clear with Henry though. The word on him for quite a while was he was chasing a bag of cash and his agent was using schools against each other to drive up the offers. Remember when people were saying he had no interest in UK and was only here to leverage UK for more money from Arkansas and UNC? Rumor yesterday was the asking price was 5 million currently (obviously no clue if that is true). I'm not as depressed when we miss on someone asking stupid money that limits who else you can go get (and can cause recruiting issues or locker room problems with other guys who want the same money that guy got).

If it was always clear, why the hell are we 1) wasting time on him and 2) setting a market for what we'll be expected to offer other recruits?

All we did with this stupid move is tell other targets how much we're willing to pay. We do this over and over.

Pope still has no clue how to navigate these waters and the program will continue to suffer until he hires someone that understands high stakes negotiations in a competitive market.

Sooooo, when call was struggling his last few years, including the 9 win season, and all the 1st round exits, recruits didn't see that?

To be fair Henry did it with his first round of schools too. He and his agent let Uconn, Duke and Kansas give him a number too. They set the market for him before he ever visited us. I'm guessing that number was still within our wheel house at the time or we wouldn't be in his final 4 and still spending money to go see him. I won't defend Pope on recruiting or even try, but I think they must feel like he's worth the effort to try and pull away from UNC/Arkansas. Or the rumors that Diggs is wanting to team up with Henry (and landing Henry would be the only way we could get Diggs) after his recent visit made the staff push their chips in on Henry.

Regardless, it was going to be hard to pull a kid from Charlotte, NC away from UNC if Malone is willing to spend the money.

If Ky didn’t recruit the top guys, people on here would be crying “we’re not even trying” then when they do, the same people cry “they’re only using Ky for the money or we’re offering too much”. Good Lord people get a grip.
Are you dumb? Yes of course it would be a problem if the University of Kentucky didn’t recruit top basketball players and yes it absolutely is also a problem that we are recruiting them and never getting them. What kind of ignorant post did you think you made here?

They are all paid mercenaries now.

If we have the money to sign elite players. Sign them.

That depends on the Richie riches though as at some point ROI has to factor in.
