Anyone with info on Bessinger development, Sullivan and Fitzy Jr also

IIrc, there is no portal transfer window after spring ball. Correct me if wrong. That means the coaches need to know if 1) they think Hank or Heck will be better next year 2) if any of the other 3 QBs especially Bessinger is looking to be a much better QB than we have right now.

If you need to get a transfer QB then it needs to be before spring ball and on campus in January to get film time with Lester, the playbook to learn, and to get spring ball reps.

So anyone hear that Bessinger has skills better than are starters right now? Fitzy Jr has been here a couple of years so he would have beat out our current starters this year if he was better so not counting on him but never know. Is Sullivan a possibility?

Best thing to do is throw them out there for a Q to see if you need to invest in a QB next year. H or H aint it... Plus one of them will be gone next year anyway. So why waste the time with one of these average QBs?

If sully or Bessinger has growing pains in a game...so what. It's no different than the **** QB play we are getting now. At least you will have more ammo to make a better decision when it comes to a QB portal

What....are we going to wait until 2028 to decide if Sully or Bessinger is worth a crap since that's when they will get their 1st starting experience? Back to square 1 anyway.... Might as well rip the bandaid off now for your future

I actually respect Michigan trying Carr to see if that freshman has any skill you can mold in the coming years

There seemed to be a lot of encouraging talk about Bess earlier, but any notion of him or Sully see action this season is definitely wishful thinking more than anything....

No notion of playing them this year unless injuries I am specifically talking about whether we need to get a portal qb or hope for improvement

Hank and Heck still have eligibility after this season unless you are talking about them transferring again??

It's rare for KF to start freshmen. I don't see it happening this year.

They plan to develop him instead of throwing him into the fire.

If we lose a couple more games and Hank and Heck are underwhelming then yes give sully and whoever else reps in games, there is no more redshirts so even playing a couple of games might be the way to go.

But right now if the hawks win 5 straight they have a good shot at the playoffs or a high level bowl game

That's true - I would even say lose 1 more and then play for the future. What's the difference between 7-4, 8-4 or 9-3 anyway? If this was next year with a 24 team playoff...then yes a big difference

Kirk doesn’t play for the future. Not his style. And if these guys were better they’d probably have already gotten a shot because year after year we have the worst QB’s in the league. And while Grono couldn’t throw a lick he was a damn good runner. Now we run RPO’s with zero chance of the QB ever keeping it.

Our whole team is made up of 3 and 4 year guys. But they are inexperienced game-wise. So you can see what having several years in the program does. And that answer is.... Not much. Practice can only do you so much

If guys can play as freshman, you play them. Especially now when the season is heading toward "participation trophy" status

Apologies - that part was not directed towards you, but rather relevant to the thread. Based on historical evidence, IMHO hoping for improvement at the QB position is a lost cause. I'd say our best option is getting a bargain basement portal QB. Maybe a QB who has been well developed at an upper MAC school? 🤷‍♂️

Yep - I would say those guys are just as good...or even better... as highly rated high school guys. And cost about the same. And already have college QB experience

Our QB development is that of a HS team.
Apparently Lester isn’t the magic man we hoped for.
spend money on 2 highly needed things;
An OC with proven big league success
A QB with a proven ability to run pass and avoid mistakes beyond the occasional
Otherwise; expect more of this same result. NIL and portal are making our program deficiencies more apparent than ever.

Grono was 63.4%, 1700+ yards, 10 TDs at Iowa last season which are very good numbers for iowa

Until Iowa staff takes the leash off their QB's this is what it will always be. Heck threw that red zone pick and he was done. Brown came in checked down continually while making numerous mistakes as well.

That's from the horses mouth, not mine. Barring injuries, they will not start him. Heck, they had a 5 star AJ Epenesa and didn't start him.
I think Bessinger hits the portal after this season. Goes to BYU or Utah to stay closer to home.

I want to see this "leash" that everyone says our QB's are on. They throw it deep, allowed to make reads. Heck is quicker with the reads than Brown, but Heck is a slinger and willing to risk it for the biscuit.

There is no "leash" Iowa just doesn't recruit good QB's. Bessinger is the best QB KF has had in almost 20 years according to the same rankings that make monumental mistakes.

At least Heck was attempting something that made sense, Brown's first INT was just situationally braindead. Why the hell are we drop back passing with 10 seconds left and no timeouts on the edge of FG range? This cluster of a game might have gone into OT if he just chucks it out of bounds.

JSully is not going to sit on the bench for a third year. Unless he has a legitimate shot at being the guy next season (which would mean both Hank and Heck transfer, and Iowa brings in an underwhelming portal QB addition), he will almost certainly enter the portal. I'm actually worried about losing Bessinger, too, which would be a monumental disaster; I can't imagine that he would be ok playing backup to Hank or Heck next season, given what we've seen so far. I have no idea what Fitz's motivations are. He may just be happy being on the team and getting life lessons from KF.

Lester has to get this QB thing figured out. I give him credit for Gronowski and for bringing the offense out of the doldrums (save yesterday), but he has a lot to prove still.

Lester draws up the plays, the players have to make them. We have no idea if Bessinger is any good. It’s far from a disaster in today’s climate if he decides to leave without playing a snap. You get a guy from the portal. Why is it his fault that our QB’s left 14 pts at a minimum out there yesterday? The plays were there to be made.

False.
1,700 with 10 and 7 isn’t good.

Can’t even be classified as “good for Iowa”

The 63% aside, all of his other passing stats at Iowa were the worst of his career.

I’ll never forget how bad his game 1 pass attempt to a wide open WR in the end zone was. It was like a toddler threw the football.

Fitz's plan is coaching like his dad. He is playing under a HOF type coach, if he cant start at Iowa he aint playing NFL so maybe Grad Asst then position coach etc
