This hit my feed in YouTube and I enjoyed it. Haven’t had much exposure to Grisham in awhile and it was good to catch up on where he is today. He hit it big with The Firm not long after I graduated State so he’s been in the public eye as a representative of Mississippi for basically my entire adult life.

I know he’s chosen a life away from Starkville since his graduation, but from his 2018 address to incoming students he clearly still has much love for his alma mater…

"I loved the big lecture halls, and I came to enjoy the professors. For the first time, after being at several schools, I was on a real campus with a diverse student body, different professors from around the world, big time sports, all of the activities that a big college can bring, and I really fell in love with State."

Does a guy who’s chosen to live in Virginia for the last 30-odd years really represent Mississippi?

Since he graduated from both of the major universities here, lived here for 40 or so years and has set the majority of his most popular novels (hundreds of millions sold all over the world) in and around the state, I’d say yeah, he’s about as big a global representative of the state as there is.

Listened to the beginning of that a few weeks ago and forgot about it. Thanks for reminding me.

I also see that Goalhanger podcasts are in your algorithm as well.

I graduated and played ball with his nephew. He, on multiple occasions, brought his little league teams down from Virginia to play us and paid for our fees into tournaments and took us out afterwards. Howie Long was an assistant coach and they both were very personable and spent lots of time with us and our families and signed autographs for all the moms who were swooning. My impression was he was a really nice guy.. Also have you been to Virginia? Charlottesville and the surrounding areas are incredibly beautiful and the public schools are phenomenal.

I also have a sneaking suspicion he knows BOC pretty well. I kinda doubt we’d have our dream baseball coach if Grisham was feeding him negative BS about State.

I’m not hating on the guy.. I just don’t think he represents MS in the same way somebody like Morgan Freeman does.

And I don’t think we really want to tout the image of Mississippi that he perpetuated in several of his books.

Did he misrepresent MS in a book? Or did he bring something to light that we'd prefer not be lit? I honestly don't know as I haven't read much of his newer stuff. I don't have any memories embedded in me that are negative about any of what I did read and I got through a lot of them.

There was a large display of memorabilia on loan from him on the 3rd floor of the library the last time I was up there a couple of years ago.
I'm a fan and still wish we had given his son a walk on spot on the baseball team.

17 that guy. What had he ever done for his alma mater?
He was stroking checks to us in the early 2000s. That was right before we did something stupid and refused to provide his kid a walkon spot. I don't think he ever wrote us off. I think he focused money where it would benefit his kid, but I'd be surprised if he stopped doing things for State, if not as much as he otherwise would have.

Grisham left Mississippi after a nutcase targeted him and his family. They decided to move to Charlottesville for peace of mind. He will tell you that his heart is still here, but not his body.

Yes it is, my wife graduated from UVA and we visit often. The problem for a Mississippi boy is that it gets a bit chilly up that way relatively speaking to here.

I’ll acknowledge I haven’t read a new book of his in probably 20 years, mostly because I don’t read novels much anymore (or sadly any full books, 17 the internet).

I did read many of his early novels cover to cover. A Time to Kill is the one that stands out to me as painting a negative Mississippi image that is not based in much reality today. But it was his first book and he started it 40 or so years ago. Not my favorite by a long shot, but I’ll give him a pass on trying for a breakthrough with that one.

Are there other ones you were thinking of that put us in a negative light? He does write legal thrillers mostly, so there kinda have to be good and bad guys.
