Probably right however I think it would take a lot for the Mets to trade Rojas / Pena / Voit or Stafura.

Ironically they’re all infielders !
Interesting question. If the Mets make a major deal, my totally uninformed guess is that Voit is gone.

We know that the Mets LOVE Stafura, as they gave up a year of control on Luke Weaver to get him, and paid half of Weaver's salary.

A lot is going to depend on if we are doing a complete rebuild or going all out for 2027. We will know, based on their interest in Skubal. And with Skubal- as much as I would love to get him- The 5 inning pitcher, no matter how good, just wears down a bullpen.

Speaking of a 5 inning pitcher- WTF with Peralta- is he the typical, just can't do it in NY?

We had one of the best rookies classes in the last twenty plus years come through this season so if anything this year was a start of a rebuild.

Whenever the season starts next year Stearns can't have another bad year so the team is absolutely going to be able to look to win immediately. As bad as 2026 was we're not far away at all.

To me the most interesting question is the one that will be answered the soonest. That is, given the certainty of a December 1 lockout, what happens in November?

Will Cohen/Stearns go balls to the wall to "get everything done" (starting with Skubal) before the lockout? Or will they be cautious and wait for the new rules to be established, knowing that by that time, the marketplace shelves may already be bare?

The teams in the WS is helpful background for the owners who want to resist significant change being pushed by the smaller market teams. No idea how much it helps, but at least some.

One of the saving graces of this year is that even with the disastrous offseason, we were able to get some really good prospects back when we cleared out the team at the deadline.
And agree- McLean, Benge, Ewing, Scott, Thornton really made for an exciting rookie class.
now- the question becomes, with those pieces and a healthy Soto and Lindor, do we sign a couple of big FA’s and make some moves where the next group will make up a big part of those trades to win big now or do we go conservative and hope for the next group to be just as good and not go all in this year.

In regard to FA's - While I love Skubal- his being that 5 inning type of guy worries me.

Other FA's in position of need
Catcher- I don't see any that are an upgrade
1B - Maybe France or Bauers
2B - Maybe Lowe but stay away from Jazz at all costs
3B - no way Bo opts out so he is locked in there and we are solid for starting SS and OF.

We could use a big bat at DH but there isn't much out there.

Pitching - I like King but again, most of the guys out there are back of the rotation guys.

If this was a normal offseason without threat of a lockout, it would be very interesting on this would play out. This having so much uncertainty, it is so hard to really judge it too much

I think they'll look at France for 1B to go doing with Young.

DH I'll have to look but would not surprise me if they try for Polanco Vientos and others rotating through there. Seems like a lot of teams don't like a dedicated DH unless you have a top tier guy and prefer to use it as a spot you run multiple through.

I think 2B we stick with Semien and Baty? but Rojas, Voit, Pitre will all be close to pouncing if that is needed.

It's not my money so go for Skubal. He's still a top SP. If not I do like King as well.

Pen should be decent with a lot of the guys we have already but look to add a big arm to the back like Morejon from SD if he doesn't get the QO.

As we've been saying all that I also think the CBA uncertainty has also played a big part in what we've seen the last year plus.

I dont disagree with any of this- what would be your thoughts on trying to bring Holmes back?

No ****. But why would you think its Voit rather than Rojas, Pitre, Stafura, etc.
The term I used was "uninformed guess". If you are interested in my thought process, you are giving me far too much credit!

But here is my thought process:

* I don't think they trade Stafura. I think they really like him, and perhaps value him more than the marketplace does. Remember he cost them a year of Weaver and half his salary.

* Rojas is their consensus #1 prospect. I don't think he's untouchable, but I think he is the closest the Mets have to untouchable.

* I don't think Pitre is regarded as highly as the others. I don't see him as the centerpiece of a major trade.

So, process of elimination.

I hear you. But not sure of the logic in trading him before guys he is better than. Granted Rojas is rated #1 but he is definitely better than those other guys. Has incredible bat to ball skills and can steal bases. I figure you'll probably retort that he would bring the best return but he would also add value for us in the lineup and we need all the hitters we can get. If we need an ace go get Skubal.

Torrens and Alvarez have both reported to a team in the Venezuelan Winter League. Alvarez will play 1B and DH only. The Mets have not authorized him to catch.

FA's I would love to see us go after...

1) Skubal...no brainer, just wish he went deeper into games
2) King - he wouldn't have to be the Ace and he has pitched in NY before

Either of these two starters should be no brainers

3) Holmes- Bring him back!

4) Sato - has to be the first position player to go after
5) Bauers - great bat but not sure about run prevention
6) Lowe - he may cost to much after a career year but I have always liked him as a player
7) France...I'm not sold on him but if we could get a 1 year flier, maybe

One thing I do not want to ever see again - is going after starting pitchers who we think we can fix or revive...

Which brings us to the critical question - how aggressive will Stearns/Cohen be in November, knowing that the rules are about to change, perhaps drastically change?

At first I thought they would take a wait and see attitude. Which creates the possibility that by the time they are ready to re-enter the marketplace, the shelves will be bare.

But based on current reports, Cohen/Stearns may just say F-it, let's sign them while we can, what's the worst that can happen to us?

And if so, they may find out.

Holmes was kind of a revival as well don't forget! Teams are going to miss but there are hits as well.

Once the WS ends and we see if Bichette opts in or out we'll see how much money they have to work with. A lot of money also comes off the books after the 27 season.

Both France and Morejon have already come out and said that they want to stay in SD. It's a question of if the new ownership can come up with the money

How can Cohen/Stearns know how much money they have to work with, until the new CBA is reached?

Granted, they may not CARE how much they have to work with, but that's a whole different question.

I'm saying within a possible team budget. Theoretically I can see Cohen not caring about whatever future system is set up as he'll cover any losses. If they did implement some kind of cap it wouldn't be able to take place for the big teams right away as there would need to be a sunset period.

Also I know mentioned Vientos as a possible DH option but I wonder since he's going into arbitration if they decide to move on and not even tender him a contract. Again with CBA looming we'll see if that's even a thing anymore.

Could certainly be that he just couldn’t handle NY !

Or I wonder whether Mets coaching / warm up processes / clubhouse culture etc screwed him up.

Amazing how he’s a world beater with Tampa !

Hopefully no to Bauers and or France.

They’re role / platoon guys

We need a solid dependable starter at 1b which I don’t see either Bauers / France and or Young being full time or part time.

Just my humble opinion !

I would have to guess that even if there is a new cap and floor- it will have to allow for a grandfather clause. So- maybe it would be best to sign a guy that you feel has many good years left, to sign them before the agreement is signed.

Agree and maybe why it makes sense if we can get 1 year deals with either of them - outside of a trade- there is zero out there for us at 1B

I don't think there will be a grandfather clause, in the sense of being able to sign players in November with absolute impunity.

IF (big if) there is a cap, I think it will include one or both of the following:

* A phase-in period. Let's say they agree on a cap of $280M. Maybe the phase in period is three years. Year 1 - $340M. Year 2 - $310M. Year 3 - $280M. (With annual escalators.)

* A one-time amnesty provision. The NBA has done this. They impose the full cap immediately, but allows teams to get under the cap by cutting players. The team still has to pay these players of course, but they don't count under the cap. If this were to happen, the Mets would likely cut Semien, Manaea, and Polanco. Maybe also Senga and/or Williams. Problem solved.

I may have called it a grandfather but the point is- it would be impossible for 2 things to happen within 2-3 years- let's say a $280-$160 range is put in place - teams over the $280 - cannot just get under the cap and teams under the $160 cannot find the players to put them over $160...

As for signing someone in Nov vs after the agreement - there is no legal way to hold a penalty for doing so. It would just fall within whatever is decided in the next agreement.

The big thing I’m curious about, is deferred contracts.
I team like the Dodgers will have $60-100 mil tied up in these for retired players for a decade.
do the change it to be ok but the full amount ties into that current year’s cap?
