Who has had the most hype of any incoming UK football player and ended up being a bust ?

Al Baker (RB) from Cadiz, KY (1985). He was projected to be really good with excellent speed and size at 6-1 220lbs. If I remember he had injury issues that kept him from ever becoming great. But he did play at UK for 4 years and was drafted by the Jets in 1991.
My dad played football at Trigg county and loved Al Baker, he could have been special.

He was all freshman SEC, First team SEC, and Second team SEC. Played pivotal roles in both music city bowl wins and was a foundational to the defense during his time at UK. Cant consider him a bust at the college level. Never panned out in the pros but won a couple of grey cups.

Actually might have just retired from football as well. Even if he didnt play in the NFL, he had a really good pro career in Canada. If he'd have switched to DL sooner he may have played in the NFL. But he still made a huge difference for UK.

ABSOLUTELY the opposite of a bust

Matt Elam is one who comes to mind...
Immediately came to mind. Lately, the twins that transferred and Brian Robinson seems to be a bust. I thought he was going to be a beast. Still time for him but he better get to getting.

Elam is the clear winner. Who was the QB transfer from Auburn that looked like he ever played football?
That’s another good one. He ended up switching positions at some Florida school if I remember correct. Can’t recall his name.

I’ve never seen a quarterback sack himself before but this kinda summed up the Joker era. We were the Bad News Bears.
Didn’t Sanchez for the Jets do something similar? I remember watching that play and just shook my head and said “that’s UK football in a nutshell”.

Micah Johnson from Fort Campbell. Wasn’t he ranked as one of the top defensive players in the country coming out of HS? I remember that Brooks wanted to move him to DE because he got so big (muscular) and lost some speed that affected his pass coverage. He balked at moving positions.
Funny story. One of my buddies who used to wreck people almost got in a fight with Micah at some party and he just looked at his arms and was like, I’m good lol. And this dude was huge too. He never lived up to his potential but he was solid I think. Been awhile tho.

Yup. Thank you. That was driving me nuts lol. I saw someone mentioned it earlier but thank you.
You're welcome. I had to do some digging myself as I remembered his last name was Gatewood but couldn't remember the first name. And it was only a few years ago that he started here so that's how bad he was. He reminded me of Morgan Newton. Both highly rated, similar build but slow processing, mechanical movements in the pocket and not the type of athlete we were told we were getting.

I think much like Newton, he LOOKED like a 4 star athlete but a quarterback he was not. And looks can be deceiving because it seemed like they were both slow as molasses.
Yup. Good call. Look like Tarzan, play like Jane I believe is the expression?

Or looks like an SEC QB getting off the bus, until they step on the field. lol. Was it newton who tackled himself for a sack? Lmao.

Aaron Boyd was unfortunately another bust. He finally had a half-way decent senior season in Joker's 2-10 final season debacle in 2012.

Stoops inability to develop a qb he recruited from high school was his biggest detriment
Yes sir. His inability to recruit one that translated to SEC Football was an issue as well. He literally never hit on trying to develop one QB that played well for us that was highly rated. They were always a backup or someone unheralded that he found that got thrown in there and worked out.

There was a WR recruit from one of the Lexington schools, I dont think he was more than a 4 star, but I cant even recall his name. He was one of the fastest WR's I ever saw, but good Lord he could literally not catch ANYTHING. He had freak speed, but no YAC because no C's lol.

Hard to call a player who suffered severe injuries a bust. Matt Elam did not have any serious ones i do believe. He was so hyped coming in and showed little to nothing
