I think he’s owed 20-25M and he won 9 last year so I don’t think he’ll be in any danger. He’s a good offensive guy but his teams can be undisciplined and make mistakes. Doesn’t strike me as a good motivator either.

What might be a surprising name could be Doeren at NC State. I’ve seen things lately about maybe it’s time and he can’t get over the hump etc…

After getting left behind I’m glad for them, hope it continues for this year (not sure they’ll be able to hold onto these guys next year).

Video about 7 mins long.

I didn’t think they would snap it either but was thinking Stein was trying to draw them potentially offsides to get closer. Didn’t think about the contrast of play calls leading to confusion, who knows maybe. Love the spread them out the qb draw in those situations but the setting it up part didn’t occur to me.

DeBoer, Grubb and Shephard became the major influences for Dahlen in his coaching career.

“I learned from their football minds, seeing how they operate and the aggressiveness they coach with,” Dahlen said. “Coach Shep and myself, we are aggressive. If we are going down, we are going down swinging. We are going to push the envelope. The players respond to that. You get some energy from the players when they feel that from us.”

Dahlen intends to operate primarily out of the shotgun with what he calls a “pretty balanced” offensive attack.

“I am big on explosive plays and eliminating negative plays (such as pre-snap penalties like false starts, tackles-for-loss, dropped passes),” he said. “We have a 16 percent rule. We want 16 percent of our plays to be explosive (16 yards or more via the pass, 12 yards or more via the run). If we have 100 plays, we want at least 16 explosive ones.”

“The biggest epidemic in college football right now is the O-line,” he said. “The depth and the development in that room in our sport has just dwindled. Even at Alabama we were complaining about depth. You want (O-linemen) to develop three years in your system, but nope, it’s one year here, one year somewhere else; new calls, new footwork.

“That has been the hardest piece at that position for us. Most teams have five guys they can count on. I want seven or eight. We are getting closer to that number. We hired Coach Barron because he is a technician coaching the position. He is detailed on footwork and aggression. Violence will be celebrated in that room specifically, and every block from a receiver that leads to a touchdown, we will point it out in a unit meeting.”

“You are probably looking at 12 possessions a game,” he began. “Shoot, I want to score on every single one of them, but if you are hitting on half of those, you are at 42 points a game. I tell our guys, I want points, but if we are in a game and it’s 8-7 and we need a field goal to win it, it’s plus two.

“To me, the important thing is, can we be competitive every single snap, and how hard can we play? I want to shock people with how hard we play and with our relentless playing style. I want them to turn on the TV and think, ‘Holy s**t, these guys play hard.’ If that is happening, you are probably finding success on the field. That is a reflection on us as coaches. If they are going to play hard, they probably like you. They want to do right by you.”

I've mentioned this before but impressed with Dickert to have generated good offenses by finding 3 different OCs (Eric Morris, Ben Arbuckle, Rob Ezell) and 3 different qbs (Cam Ward, Robby Ashford, Gio Lopez) and at schools like WSU and WF no less.

From the article:

When a previous connection doesn't exist, the first six months together are what Dickert calls "the discovery zone." No game-planning takes place. Dickert and the offensive staff must assess how their new QB wants to be coached, how he processes the game and, ultimately, how he can be most successful.

"Not enough people in coaching go into situations and leverage players' strengths enough," Dickert said. "They just have these ideals of what they want to do, and they try to fit square pegs in round holes. Every place we've been, every quarterback we've had, it's always been a little different. I think that's great coaching."

"All these guys had talent; they were all different," Cignetti said. "Some were pocket, some were dual, and some were in-between. And then you build around what [the quarterback] does well. But you've got a core system, which about 70% of that doesn't change a whole lot. And they develop within that."

The common thread?

"Great competitiveness," Cignetti said. "You've got to want to be great."

Coaches who annually take transfers emphasized that the offense must be shaped around each quarterback's skills, not the other way around. But some elements are prioritized in the evaluations. Dickert wants an element of mobility. Not every quarterback has to run as John Mateer did for him at Washington State -- 826 yards, 15 touchdowns in 2024 -- but the ability to take off is important.

Wake Forest also wants "snap throwers," Dickert said, who can get the ball out quickly to operate an offense built around run-pass options.

"You have to be able to layer the football," Dickert said. "We don't want to just see [deep] throws. We want to see [intermediate] throws and how fast you can get it out on bubble screens and quick game."

That’s shouldn’t have been a penalty for the UAB TD celebration, that was nothing. TD still counted though.

UAB up 24-17, ECU’s turn

UAB gets a pick 6 to seal it in OT…30-17 on ECU
That's very unusual, to win in OT by two scores. Normally in that situation the intercepting player just goes down and the game is over. Not a good play to keep running. Had he fumbled with the original offensive team recovering, the game would have continued - first and ten at the point of the recovery.

Yeah, and you probably would probably coach players to fair catch every punt and kickoff. ;)

-Kidding aside, very astute point. Wonder if the player who ran back the INT got a talk on the sidelines or post game.

Nick Saban says that "We'll find out what Indiana is made of when they play Ohio State." I think we know what they're made of by now. We saw it when they stomped Alabama and Oregon in the playoff last year.

I love rooting for underdogs like IU but there’s brand bias. I’m probably guilty of some of it too.

Can you imagine a reigning undefeated national on a 20+ win streak not being #1 or #2 going into the season. IU was ranked “lower” in the back half of the top 10. If the name was Alabama or OSU or UGA etc that wouldn’t have been the case until they lost.

All that said, I feel like OSU will win. Shut down the run and make Hoover beat you. He’s played well but it took a few explosives to pull the rabbit out of the hat against Nebraska.

I’ll be rooting for IU though, probably biggest game ever in Bloomington.

After the INT, UW has turned it around. 4th and 2 stop and now near the goal line.

UW converts 7-0 on Purdue

Memphis 10-3 on Tulane

Brown throws another this time in a worse position, just inside the redzone.

UW defense comes through again and holds them to a FG….7-3 on Purdue

I didn’t think that was a PI on UW, Purdue lucky to get a fresh set of downs inside the 10

Purdue with a 59yd run to get them down there and the lucky PI helps them tie it at 10.

Purdue gets a lucky break with a punt off the heel of a UW player and they recover it at the 10. They score a TD on the next play. 17-17

UW has looked much better this week compared to last despite the 3 TOs. The iffy PI and punt deflection off the foot have gotten Purdue 2 TDs.

Sort of iffy roughing on Purdue gets UW a fresh set of downs and they score a TD. 24-17 UW
ridiculous call

If Purdue had played defense like last week, they would win this game. Now they'll need to open up that offense and play for broke

not sure how they overturned that. control with knee down and extended arm for fall and ground can't cause the break there. bs
