Hard decisons for PSU off season regarding chronically injured players

Namely Max Granville (DE) & Alex Tatsch (LBer). If PSU chooses to retain them, it should be with reduced NIL. These are the tough decisions HCMC and his GM have to make in this era of "college football". This is now two years in a row for Granville and three years in a row for Tatsch with season ending injuries. I'm sure they're both high character young men; unfortunately they have contributed very little on the field.

I totally agree. Like I've previously posted, one time is an accident, two times are a trend, and three times are basically a certainty of more injuries. In this new era of professional college football, you have to treat your roster like a NFL roster and, if a player constantly is injured not only for games but for the majority of whole seasons, you have to move on from them unless they are elite talents. It's a shame, but some bodies just are not physically capable of playing this sport at this level.

Retain scholarship if they want to stay; cut/reduce NIL.

The only reason why I would consider retaining a scholarship for a constantly injured player is because it may create negative ramifications for future recruits. Otherwise, I wouldn't even retain scholarships for constantly injured players; after a while, it just becomes a waste of time not only for the program but also for the player who probably needs to get on with his life's work rather than worrying about playing football.

They usually would be offered the chance to complete their degree, minus any money.

My guess is the optics of offering it far outweigh whatever actual cost there is given a lot of these guys are not keen on giving up their dream of making money by playing football.

This is the way the NFL handles injury prone players. Unfortunately it's a necessity. This doesn't mean Penn State needs to handle it this way.

In the future years we will probably handle it this way but I believe JUST for next season, we will bring back the injury prone players with the same parameters as this season.

But the reality is we need to stop thinking of losing Granville, Tatsch, Howard, etc, as crippling losses and we need to fill out their spots with players of equal talent. As I said before some kids are just made of glass, its that simple

I saw the Tatsch news. He has had like 4 major injuries in 3 years. Crazy.

I agree we can't just keep giving them the same NIL. They are getting paid now and contributing nothing.

Drop the NIL to some reasonable amount that makes sense for us. I would keep the scholarship. This is a business. Neither of them will have great options to transfer given their injury history.

We won't have the money to just plug and play with a guy of equal talent when we lose guy like Howard for example. You don't stockpile talent like in the old days. It is a new day and simple math. We have say $1.5 million to spend on 3 WRs. Howard is a number one so he gets $750K the other two get to split $750k, just making these numbers up to illustrate a point. The 2 and 3 guys are not as good as Howard (hence they get less money) so the injury is crippling in a way as we have seen this year with Howard.

Neither of them make that much and their backups dont have much production. There are actually players ahead of the making 6x the money with zero production.

Ttatsch was the same class as cam smith and Arrington who have less production combined.

The Athletic just had an article stating these players aren’t amateur student athletes anymore . With the pay to play comes the heat of criticism and harsher consequences. IMo, scholarships will go by the wayside at some point in this business model of sports. The link just for reference of what’s out there , paywall bast@rds.

Yes, now that a lot of these players are professional football players, they must face the negative consequences of being professional football players. If a NFL player doesn't earn his salary because he's constantly injured, he eventually is going to be released. Unfortunately, that's the way that it's now going to have to be with these major college teams that are paying millions of dollars to these players not to go to school, but to make contributions on the field.

I sympathize with players like Granville and Tatsch, but after a while, you have to say that enough is enough.

Who on the team is worth their pay?

Using your benchmark there are about 60+ players who should go.

Tasch has more tackles.than Arrington and Smith combined.

Wasn't there a program where injured players retain a scholarship but are not counted against the 105 players? If that is still a viable program, perhaps that will be offered to them.
And then they can work towards their degree and get a good job. Oh wait, they don't do that anymore.

I think we should keep both as the potential is off the charts but at a reasonable NIL share considering their injury situations. Fyi not insider info on him, just opinion that sometimes frames should only carry so much weight. Granville was at 220 as a recruit and over 250 now. That may be too much weight for him. He is an elite athlete and a healthy Granville probably equals at least one more win to date. Tatsch is a sad story. Not sure he can get past the injury bug.

Not that tough a decision on either. They willl both be back. Neither make that much. Psu also does not have anyone to replace them at this point. That could change with the portal.

How much has Arrington produced?

100% correct. This isn't a charity. You have to earn that money.

Agree. Can't just discard these players. Let them stay on scholarship with the medical/rehab ongoing. NIL must be greatly reduced.
What you see in this thread is the typical rabid fan over reaction. First of all, are you going to fill all 100+ roster spots with more talented players than Granville and Tatsch? LOL in your dreams. In addition, PSU has team physicians and training staff that will advise CMC and GM about the specific injuries and any potential long term recovery issues. Each situation is different and will be evaluated. Finally, assuming NIL contracts with the aforementioned athletes are annual, it is likely injuries would impact their market value and that will be a consideration for future agreements.

Considering that the one player basically has missed the last two seasons except for one game and the other player had to have shoulder surgery in high school and was injured coming into this season and seemingly is never physically able to play, two tackling dummies would've provided a greater on-field contribution than they have. If Campbell can't find two more reliable players than these two, then this program just should go to the Patriot League.

Also, it's obvious that these two players just are physically unable to withstand the rigors of this sport, and it's almost a guarantee that they will suffer more injuries. And how do I know that? Well, I just look at the paterrn that has developed. The trouble with injury prone players is that they always are injured.

When I first was hired at my last job back in 2000, one of the partners at my law firm told me something like 95% of doing a good job is actually showing up, and that's true.

I am not arguing with you....I will ask you consider physiology that not everyone heals at the same rate. I have heard many reports of players being pressured to return to soon. Possibly these two young men need additional rehab beyond what is customary. I was lucky, I heal fast, but time will catch up to you....I blew out my right knee, returned only to over compensate and. hurt both left knee and left hip. The best example of this is Micah Parsons....he blew out an ACL and Green Bay is taking his rehab slow to make sure everything is 100%. He has talked about this due to fans asking why he isn't back. As competitive as Max and Alex are I fear they may rush to return to the field before THEIR body actually is ready. And there has been enough accusations to believe coaches may promote it.

Great advice. How is suffering a severe injury "not showing up?" I can't wait for PSU to send a message to future recruits, high school and portal, get an injury there and they cut you. We already have blue chips breaking down the door to come to PSU.

That’s okay. Penn State has plenty of Cow Chip recruits looking at the football program.
