The $$$ has to be unreal.Wow! I am shocked SEC & Big 10 have given up those conference championship games.
I think it has to do with more games equals more money.Lets go to 64 like March Madness and have some play in games while were at it, "we'll stand a better chance of getting in".
Isn't that everybody's argument, that they just want to get in? Just watered down participation trophies is all it is
8 teams in a 24 team play off is probably a lot bigger payday than the SECCG.Wow! I am shocked SEC & Big 10 have given up those conference championship games.
This means the ESPN Unlimited App will be way more worth the price. You could just buy it for 2 months and see all of these games
My unpopular opinion is that gambling is driving the train. With opt outs and all, bowl games have become worthless and unpredictable. A 24 team playoff gives ESPN enough content, and hopefully it will create more parity in the sport.Lets go to 64 like March Madness and have some play in games while were at it, "we'll stand a better chance of getting in".

Right on cue.My unpopular opinion is that gambling is driving the train. With opt outs and all, bowl games have become worthless and unpredictable. A 24 team playoff gives ESPN enough content, and hopefully it will create more parity in the sport.
Everyone that loves the 4-team playoff forgets that 88 of the top 100 recruits went to six schools. NIL has helped even that out, now every Power 4 team and a few more G6 teams have a legitimate shot at the playoffs year in and year out.
It won't happen, but I wish they would take the bias of humans out. One model that was discussed early was 7 SEC, 7 Big Ten, 4 Big 12, 4 ACC, 1 at-large and 1 G5. It will probably be the committee voting on the top 23 + one G5 though.
It's not. SECCG drew 16.9 million viewers and all revenues go to the SEC. 1st round playoff games only drew 9.9 million and far lesss than half goes to the SEC.8 teams in a 24 team play off is probably a lot bigger payday than the SECCG.
Right on cue.
Top 5 conference champions + 19 at-large
There, fixed it for you. Since the Catholics don't seem to care for conferences and start the season Top 10 almost every year lets just let them start the playoff season as a Top 10 too!It won't happen, but I wish they would take the bias of humans out. One model that was discussed early was 7 SEC, 7 Big Ten, 4 Big 12, 4 ACC,1 at-largeNotre Dame, and 1 G5. It will probably be the committee voting on the top 23 + one G5 though.

Edited to say I guess that eliminates some bowl games, or, will they just call it the Mashed Potato bowl playoff game ?
I wish this could somehow force Notre Dame to join a conference out of fear of being left out. There, fixed it for you. Since the Catholics don't seem to care for conferences and start the season Top 10 almost every year lets just let them start the playoff season as a Top 10 too!
That seems like entirely too many acc and big 12 teams to be guaranteed. Too many guarantees period, honestly.7 SEC, 7 Big Ten, 4 Big 12, 4 ACC, 1 at-large and 1 G5.
That’s a solid pointMy unpopular opinion is that gambling is driving the train. With opt outs and all, bowl games have become worthless and unpredictable. A 24 team playoff gives ESPN enough content, and hopefully it will create more parity in the sport.

They sell advertising for games. They have more games... that means more money made. Does that mean they wont' try to get even more through subscription increases? No, they are always trying to do that but more playoff games won't be the reason. They'll just raise the price or have a "Playoff Package" and charge extra for that...............
The ACC & Big 12 do not deserve 4 spots each. Name 4 ACC and/or Big 12 teams that deserve to be in a 24 team playoff last season or this season. It won't happen, but I wish they would take the bias of humans out. You cannot convince me that the SEC agreed to give up the SECCG without being guaranteed more additional revenue from the 24 team CFP above what the SEC was receiving from the 12 team CFP.It's not. SECCG drew 16.9 million viewers and all revenues go to the SEC. 1st round playoff games only drew 9.9 million and far lesss than half goes to the SEC.
It sounds like Notre Dame might be required to play 10 Power 4 games to be eligible. They are actually playing 10 this year - 6 ACC plus Wisconsin, Michigan State, Purdue, & BYUI wish this could somehow force Notre Dame to join a conference out of fear of being left out.
That ain't even a HOT TAKE!Next year we should make it
I guess this is somewhat beside the point, but I continue to be confused by the media rights deal that the SEC signed with ESPN/Disney a few years back. Of the Top 10 watched regular season games last year, the SEC made up 14 of the 20 teams that played, and my bet is that this percentage only increases if you go to the Top 20 or 30 watched games. And yet, the SEC is getting 710M/yr compared to B1G's 1.1B/yr. I'm no expert on this subject, but I think Sankey signed a **** deal and he knows itMy unpopular opinion is that gambling is driving the train. Of course you're right. And actually looking at the math, it does seem to at least break even. SECCG is 16.9 million viewer with SEC getting 100% of the revenues. 4 additional teams after splitting with the other team is 9.9 million * 4 / 2 = 19.8 million viewers. Of course this assumes the new 1st round games will draw as many viewers as the current 1st round games do (they probably won't). I know it's not that simple and I'm sure there's a pretty big guarantee to both SEC and Big 10. And of course this assumes they actually do eliminate the conference championship games. From what Ross says, that may not be set in stone. You cannot convince me that the SEC agreed to give up the SECCG without being guaranteed more additional revenue from the 24 team CFP above what the SEC was receiving from the 12 team CFP.
Another consideration - how many more home CFP games will be played annually on SEC campuses and how much $ are those additional games worth to SEC schools & cities?
Man, what a cupcake draw for Mississippi. Again.Using AP Poll, current playoff:
(24) SMU at (9) Ole Miss. > Winner to BYU
(23) Boise State at (10) Texas Tech > Winner to Texas
(22) LSU at (11) Utah > Winner to Alabama
(21) Wake Forest at (12) UCLA > Winner to Indiana
(20) Houston at (13) Missouri > Winner to Ohio State
(19) USC at (14) Tennessee > Winner to Miami
(18) Oklahoma State at (15) Kentucky > Winner to Notre Dame
(17) Iowa at (16) Mississippi State > Winner to Georgia
24 teams is the correct way to go. That equates to ~17% of the teams in the league to make the playoffs (still the lowest of any league, any sport).
24 teams is the correct way to go. That equates to ~17% of the teams in the league to make the playoffs (still the lowest of any league, any sport). College baseball and basketball is ~21%. NBA, WNBA, MLS all ~50%+, NFL 44%, MLB 40%. The 12 team playoff was only 8.7%. There really shouldn't be any pushback at all. But we all know folks have to disagree water is wet, just to be that guy.
Both good points. That's why I always thought 16 was the right number. That’s really misleading. There are 68 power conference teams. 22 or 23 of those teams are going to make the playoff. That’s about 34% of teams with a snowball’s chance in hell of winning a title in week 0 that end up making the field.
College baseball and basketball are very different because there is a much larger pool of teams that can win a title in each.
In basketball you have UConn, Villanova, and many other much smaller schools who have won a title. Several others like Butler, Gonzaga, and even George Mason and Loyola Chicago who have come very close.
Baseball - Coastal Carolina, Fresno State, Wichita State, Rice, and others have titles and runner-up finishes. Several others like Stony Brook and Troy and USM have made Omaha.
Football went from one of the most exclusive postseason tournaments to by far the most inclusive. This is about money and nothing else.
And all of those league’s regular season games do not have near the significance or importance of CFB. Lose your first 3 in the NFL? No biggie if you are in the NFC South you can still make the playoffs going 9-5 the rest of the way. Lose your first 3 games in CFB? You are done.24 teams is the correct way to go. Your numbers are also misleading - using your logic 35 Power 4 teams made the NCAA basketball tournament this spring & 31 baseball teams, so half the Power 4 makes the Baseball & Basketball Tournaments while 34% make the new CFP. Those numbers seem reasonable. That’s really misleading. There are 68 power conference teams. 22 or 23 of those teams are going to make the playoff. Not anymore, keeps the season alive longer. If State starts out 2-2, we used to say we are done and fan engagement diminishes. Now, we will still have hope. I know she is a dangerous lil lady to keep around. But, I would rather have a chance deep into the season instead of hoping for a Liberty Bowl appearance 1/4 of the way through the season. And all of those league’s regular season games do not have near the significance or importance of CFB.
