What do you think Rutgers would realistically need to pay for next head coach in money and years?

Curious what budget for next head coach Rutgers would offer.

has to be $7-8 million per year for 5 years at a minimum to attract a good candidate.

Is this right ball park or would we need to be higher?

guess bigger question is would Rutgers be willing and able to pay it?

$6M–$7M is the going rate for the middle-to-bottom of the B1G right now, which is fine, but any good coach is also going to demand serious NIL and rev-share guarantees before taking this job.

Instead of overpaying for some washed "big name" who is already very rich, RU needs to go find a brilliant, hungry, young guy who already has some HC experience. Pay him around $6M with a big bonus for 9+ wins, put the extra cash straight into NIL, and give him a strict 5-year deal no knee-jerk extensions after one fluke bowl game, make him put together back to back winning seasons first.

if we are going for the rate as Greg, then we are not getting anything that moves the needle. We either go the way of Indiana and find that next great coach from the lower levels that has succeeded everywhere he has been so far. And then you get to bring him in closer to a $4M ark or- you have to blow out the bank and be up closer to 8 figures to get a proven P4 guy

The new head coach is probably gonna want his own staff, which will be expensive, and demand a significant upgrade in NIL money. And add in all the buyouts of the current staff. This is gonna be real expensive.
Can Rutgers afford it ?

How much Rutgers is willing to pay for a new HC and staff along with paying off Greg that might be the problem when going after a replacement for Schiano

They will have no problem covering the salaries for the next coach and staff. The head coach's salary may be slightly higher however, I doubt the coordinators are going to be paid Top 10 in college football money. So, there are some offsets there plus, there will be a large reduction in support staff which will reduce some of the current spend as well.

NIL will increase for the next coach; it's something they've been working on whether Greg returning or not. The biggest question is going to be how much new money comes in because a coaching change was made. TBD but every candidate is going to demand more which should not be a surprise.

The cost really is not the issue- we are already losing Greg's worth in salary by the number of fans that just don't care. Keli and Tate must already see how many 20-30 year diehard fans who have just left. And not only attracting the millions of others in the area who would be spending money if we were a winner.

Considering just 26.1% of coaching changes lead to a winning record and performance improvement, there is something other than money that is the most important ingredient. Most people think they have solved it, but history shows they haven't.

Why would there be buyouts for staff? Very few on staff have multi year contracts. And the ones that do will not be able to sit on the sidelines without accepting a new role. So there will be offset in costs. Only one that we will have to worry about eating the contract is Greg

Well, it is THE problem. But we are in the Big Ten now, and this is the moves that Big Ten schools make. Keli and Tate have to get it figured out.

Schiano Schiano'ing this early into his second contract really sped up a tough timeline, but it is what it is.

Perhaps it's just a mistake on my part to assume that this past offseason when they hired a new group of defensive coaches...some were signed to more than one-year contracts. I really don't recall. Besides, I thought Rutgers was already losing money at a record pace. Hence my wondering where this new money was gonna come from.
BTW, perhaps my experiencing all of the brilliance of every Rutgers head football coach since Dick Anderson and the move to the Big Time has left me skeptical that the next one is gonna be anything like Cignetti.

The assistant coaches usually work on 2-year deals so there would be one year to cover. However, most are not taking a year off and will find other jobs so that will offset some or all of what Rutgers owes them. Some analysts and support staff have multiyear deals, but I believe many work on annual contracts.
