This is a chart of the fees that are charged to normal students for athletics. Most of the SEC doesn't charge.

But look at the Sun Belt. At USM, students are charged $1605 on top of tuition to subsidize athletics. At South Alabama - $3914. The lowest Group of 6 school is higher than the highest in the B1G and the SEC

I'm more confident than ever that there will be a schism in the FBS.

Is that an actual surcharge on top of tuition etc, or the athletic department "takes" that much from tuition?

If it's a surcharge, how on 17ing earth does USM get every student to go along with paying $1600 for *that*???

Some schools label it as "Athletic Fee" others its just included in "tuition and Required Fees" but its charged to every student.

I'll use South Alabama as an example because they are the worst offender.

South Alabama Tuition and Fees: $12,038
Alabama Tuition and Fees: $11,918

USA is more expensive than Alabama and stingier with scholarship money.

Meanwhile Troy is $10,176

Jacksonville State's athletics fee is $276/semester, so this isn't what that chart represents for them.
Source: me. I started paying it this semester. 7.25 semesters to go.

ETA: I bet this is total monies provided to the athletics department from the university budget, divided by the number of students.

Yes, you're probably right but wouldn't that be money laundering? If it's not optional, then go to another school.

Another way to look at this. If we charged what Ole Miss does, it would give the athletic department $6.5 million.

That is NOT what the chart says. It says it's amount of subsidies paid to the athletic department PER undergraduate student, not by each undergraduate student. Universities receive funding and have income streams beyond just student tuition.

Students at many schools do have required athletic fees, but no school is charging students $2k, $3K or $4k+ as an annual athletic fee.

Correct, total subsidy. Which is just the amount they paid for the program outside revenues. So in other words these programs are losing money, and this chart is attempting to make it look like students are having to pay for it and essentially being screwed.

Maybe, maybe not. But the chart is definitely intentionally deceiving.

Yeah, I don't think you can charge a student something they are not using. Like you can charge a technology fee, because one would assume they are using the school's technology at some point. Like at MSU they are using Canvas for online classes.

I would sue if I am being charged something that I do not actively participate in.

At UPig, the is no automatic athletic fee but there is a $215 access pass fee to be eligible to buy student tickets and such.
