Early 80’s, Tim Parenton started in place of John Bond and led us to a win over LSU. Game was in Jackson. Never did learn exactly why Bond didn’t play that day. Rumor was that he got in trouble over something and it wasn’t injury related. The real reason never came out.
The game Parenton started was the 6-7 loss to Southern Miss. Bond was 4-0 vs LSU.

I think we had two in the same game. 2017, Taxslayer bowl.

Louisville had Heisman winner Lamar Jackson at QB, we picked him 4 times and sacked him six times.

Meanwhile, we had a head coach, Gregg Knox, who was coaching his very first game as head coach of the Bulldogs after Dan the man departed at the end of the season before the bowl game.

And, at quarterback, Keytaon Thompson, who was making his very first career start following the injury to Nick Fitzgerald from those Ole Miss ******** in the Egg Bowl.
We won the game, much to everyone's surprise.
Keytaon would return to his backup roll in 2018, and would leave us for Virginia to become a wide receiver in 2019.
Knox meanwhile, would get another shot at head coach for the Florida gators, again because Dan left the team. His first head coaching attempt as a Gator was a win versus Florida State

Not State, but one of the biggest RATs of all time was Clint Longley. Thanksgiving 1974. Came in in the 3rd quarter when Staubach got hurt down 16-3. Threw for 203 yards in a 24-23 win. That was half the yards in his 3-year career.

Should have been the Top team. He and that team were that good. Richard just got outcoached by Boeheim. And while I still can't believe Marcus was on the take, he certainly choked the chicken.

Would have been fun to see a rematch with Kentucky.
Bullard might be the answer to this riddle, strictly by the definition

Was on our team, directly helped Cuse win

If one leads-to-winning play can define a RAT, then…

CJ SIRMONES

(still wide open)

C.J. Sirmones (Curtis Sirmones Jr.) was a tight end for the Mississippi State Bulldogs football team, best remembered for catching a game-tying 38-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Wayne Madkin with 27 seconds remaining in the 1999 Egg Bowl against Ole Miss (a 23-20 win).
I had forgotten how little time was left when he caught that TD pass.

It’s still simply unfathomable to this day that we were down 20-13 with 27 seconds left, and ended up winning 23-20 in regulation.

Myles Gentry as a freshman in the SEC tournament in 2013, shut down... South Carolina? Think he'd only been used sparingly in relief appearances. I just remember someone here was pissed he got the start.

The run Girado had in the 2013 post season was very RAT like. He was lights out that year but mainly used for 1-2 innings all year (after being a 5+ ERA guy for 3 years). Then had an insane stretch of games in the post season where he was striking out 10 / game. I'd bet half his IP and Ks that year came in the post season.

That is a great trivia question. John Bond is the only quarterback in history to have a 4-0 record against LSU.
I saw it in Tiger Stadium when Bond beat them the last time. He had quite the day running and passing. He ran the ball straight up the middle for 80 yards. Watched Bond play over a dozen games live and that may have been his best performance.

After that game, he ge got the nickname, the Mad Bomber.

I'll never forget that game. Our kicker, Dana Moore, who was usually good, missed a 29 yard FG late that would have given us the win.
Moore had a groin or hamstring injury, I believe, and he could not hit the ball with the same force.

The Random ******* Theory - has to be a random guy on an opposing team that beats Mississippi State almost single handedly. By rule, Mississippi State can not have a RAT.

Original RATs were Erik Kimrey and Brad Boyd. Kimrey came in and threw a 25 yard TD pass late to beat us at South Carolina in 2000. Boyd could not miss in the 02-03 opener at the Hump against Louisiana-Lafayette. We had a finger up his nose and he was hitting from the logo, dropping 43 on one of Stans' best teams and one of the few times we were preseason ranked.

Kimrey was a walk on at South Carolina who threw for 248 yards and one touchdown in his career. Boyd ended up averaging 10 points a game for his career, but coming into that night, he had averaged 6 points a game off the bench.

Kimrey is coaching Manning's kid at Baylor School in Chattanooga: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erik_Kimrey
Boyd is coaching high school basketball in Louisiana.

Story on Kimrey's TD pass against us. Seventh string QB.

The older I get the more I apparently remember stuff wrong. I used to remember the score from about every game since the early 1960’s until current. Getting old sucks but it beats the alternative.

Not MSU related, but how about Max McGee in the first Super Bowl. He was the 34 year old backup tightend who was so hungover he forgot to bring his helmet and had to borrow a teammate's helmet. The starting tightend got hurt and Max had to play. McGee recorded seven receptions for 138 yards and two touchdowns, in a 35–10 Packers' victory.
