I do think Francis, Gurdak, smith and Sydnor are our 4 best players

The only question is can he defend 5 men in the Big 10.It’s just one game and Luigi Suigo may be overrated, but Gurdak’s exhibition game was impressive. According to early big boards, such as NBA Draft Room and Tankathon, Luigi Suigo (who Gurdak matched up against) is ranked as the number 1 center and a projected lottery pick in the 2027 NBA draft.
Gurdak responded by scoring 19 points, shooting 50% from the field and grabbing 8 rebounds without picking up a single foul.
He matched Luigi’s shooting % from the field, matched him in rebounds, and outscored him 19 to 10. Luigi was limited to 10 points. 8 rebounds and picked up 3 fouls. Luigi did have 3 blocks to Gurdak’s single block. Overall they seemed to be closely matched as Luigi’s blocks and defensive presence countered Gurdak’s higher scoring.
Francis.Agree it’s a better indicator than the cupcakes

Gotta make shotsI can’t see a situation where a healthy Mark is not starting.
Hopefully Jones.Francis and Francis as your top 2 guards?
Just has to make shots and he’s going to play a lotI think Lino getting overhated. Yeah he had some bad drives to the rim but he got up threes, was a great playmaker and I’m sure a little more time together could’ve had even more assists to Gurdak, on top of being a good defender. He lacks much of an in between game still and doesn’t go up with much control which can be frustrating but upon rewatch I think you’ll see his process was decent and the key to us unlocking better shot selection will be giving him the rock.
I think 6 7 the most6'8 tops probably.
If so, that is not going to be good news for BuchananYes agreed. Jones could be the best defensive player on the team.
Not sure that's true. Ones a 2/3, DB more a 2-4, always good to have multiple options, they will both play plenty. If so, that is not going to be good news for Buchanan
I don’t think Buchanan is quick enough anyway to cover guards. If so, that is not going to be good news for Buchanan
DB isn’t covering 2s in the BIG. I see him playing a little less than last year. Around 20 mpg. Will not play any center. That will be the difference. A lot depends how many minutes Sydnor gets. Not sure that's true. Ones a 2/3, DB more a 2-4, always good to have multiple options, they will both play plenty.
Were we watching the same game. There were players flying all over the place for both teams. It is a real competition but it is not played with game intensity. No fouls for Gurdak and the Nova big was also mostly going no contact. Part of the gentlemen's agreement in these things revolves around nobody wanting to get hurt in a scrimmage. That said, I can tell by the shine our new center has a lot of polish on his game. Very squared away. In the right spot, taking the right shot.
Played full speed but not one foul for Gurdak, Junior, Ware or Miteo? When does that happen? Does it makes sense to happen when the best player on Nova is 7'3" future lottery pick with a half foot of clear vision over anyone we put on the floor. From the center position, this was not played like a typical Big East or B1G game.Did you watch? Both team played hard, guys were hitting the floor for loose
We HOPE he will not play any center, I don't really think he will either, but not convinced any of our backups would be better, although maybe Ware can give minutes this year. I have low expectations for Buca and the kid. I could see as much 15 min at the 4, 10 at the three, but yeah, anywhere from 18-25 wouldn't surprise me. He only got 24 on a team with one forward last year, so dropping wouldn't surprise.DB isn’t covering 2s in the BIG. I see him playing a little less than last year. Around 20 mpg. I'll be shocked if that kid ends up a future lottery pick, but size, even mediocre tempts, so who knows.Played full speed but not one foul for Gurdak, Junior, Ware or Miteo? When does that happen? He has no understanding of change of pace and at his size that's a real problem, esp in term of finishing. Think his offensive upside is far from off the charts.Lino’s upside on offense is off the charts given how quick and athletic he is. He was obviously needs to make more shots than he did in the exhibition game, but having someone who will generally make the opposing teams fastest player look slow creates huge problems for defenses,
Buca saw time at center for KState. He’s not Fall. I don’t think he’s great but he’s over 7 foot and will be a better option that Buchanan at the 5. Miteo looked lost to me in a Fall-like way.We HOPE he will not play any center, I don't really think he will either, but not convinced any of our backups would be better, although maybe Ware can give minutes this year. 12 minutes as a 23 three year old. He is what he is. Yes, better than Darren at the 5 - match up dependent.Buca saw time at center for KState. He’s not Fall. I don’t think he’s great but he’s over 7 foot and will be a better option that Buchanan at the 5. Miteo looked lost to me in a Fall-like way.
I don’t think I had same takeaway with Miteo. Idk if he is completely ready to contribute quite yet but he did a good job rebounding, clearly physical enough and even had a great rep on Royal, even though he failed to finish it with a rebound which is the freshman in him showing. But I think there’s a gap between him and Fall. He looked even better than Ogbole on his first season for us.Buca saw time at center for KState. He’s not Fall. He’s not strong with the ball right now when he grabs rebounds. That’s a big issue.I don’t think I had same takeaway with Miteo. How old was Ogbole going into last season? I don’t think it’s out of the realm for Buca to give us similar defense in 10-15 mpg. The difference is - he’s not our starting 5. Miteo is raw but could come on as the season goes on. We’ll see. Ware looked like he might be playable this season. And then finally - we haven’t seen Sydnor yet but he’s certainly built more like a true PF than anyone on last year’s roster. Would figure to be the far more likely candidate to slide to center if necessary than 6-5 Buchanan.12 minutes as a 23 three year old. He is what he is. This is the problem with people just looking at a Boxscore and not attending the game and concluding because Gurdack had no fouls it was not played like a typical game . If you were there , it was very intense. The defense both teams played except for a few lapses were in your face one on one man defense and guys were diving on the floor for a lot of loose balls. Villanova’s center was called for 3 fouls and he went straight up on 2-3 more that ended in blocks instead of fouls. He also blocked Lino’s game winning layup . That was not a regular season game but as good a test for both teams in an exhibition that you will ever see . It was nice to see RU playing defense without fouling. We had 2 players with 4 fouls.
That is the problem with watching highlights. You miss the action. Lino will be the fastest player on the court in any game we play . He didn’t finish a couple of drives but he threatens the defense every time he drives . He had 5 assists and would have had 2 more if Gurdack held onto the passes when he was driving. He was running the offense getting the ball to the other scorers but also looking to attack. I tend to believe he will make that sophomore leap that will help us tremendously. All the more defensive attention paid to him will free up more open looks for Francis and others. Your if hesitancy is happening right in front of your eyes. Enjoy.in the brief highlights I saw from the game - one of the takeaways I saw was Lino distributing more than I ever remembering him doing last year
so it gave me a little hope that he can develop into a bit of a distributor
but agree - at this point I don’t know how anyone can use the term “off the charts” with respect to him right now
Now if he can use that speed more effectively, under control, and more consistently finish and distribute… well THEN he would be something special . But its a gigantic “IF”
Not sure about that. He looks skilled compared to our last 10 years of centers. Jay Young will have a tremendous impact on him and his development. Both Miteo and Ware will give us some production and unlike the zero we got from backups in the past. Gurdack, Ware , Buca and Miteo is the strongest and deepest 5 spot we have ever had. Believe we are in good shape there. Buca is likely the only rim protector but the others should rebound and play okay defense. He’s not strong with the ball right now when he grabs rebounds. That’s a big issue.
It was a limited sample but his reaction speed didn’t look very good to me on those rebounds getting tied up on one and committing a turnover on another. And the 3 point shot obviously a terrible decision that got him yanked. Not sure about that. He looks skilled compared to our last 10 years of centers. Think EO is 23 now, so 22 going into last year. Its sounded like Buca hasn't been impressive thus far, we'll have to see when he actually steps on the court. If Miteo is needed this year, it's a failure. He's 17. Agree, Ware looked better, would hold up at C better than Darren. That's why I said we HOPE DB isn't needed there. How old was Ogbole going into last season? I don’t think it’s out of the realm for Buca to give us similar defense in 10-15 mpg. His reaction was not bad for a raw player. It was a limited sample but his reaction speed didn’t look very good to me on those rebounds getting tied up on one and committing a turnover on another. And the 3 point shot obviously a terrible decision that got him yanked.
Small sample in his first college game, I would not judge anyone too harshly. It was a limited sample but his reaction speed didn’t look very good to me on those rebounds getting tied up on one and committing a turnover on another. And the 3 point shot obviously a terrible decision that got him yanked.
Any college athlete can tell you, yes, scrimmages are played with intensity. More than you get in practice. But they mean nothing. There is nothing as intense as a real game that gets counted on your record. Scrimmages are great, but they aren't that.Don’t agree. It’s an exhibition for better or worse it doesn’t count and it’s not the same pressure as a real game
His reaction was not bad for a raw player.
You really shouldn’t freak out about our center shooting a three as almost every center in the country does it. Gurdack took 3 of them and they all looked good. They didn’t go in and you are judging on results only. The form for Gurdack was really good and I would be shocked if he doesn’t hit them this year. Miteo’s form needs work. But again it was open and better to find out in an exhibition whether he has that skill set or not
Probably one less rebounder down low for the other team. You do know Gurdack took zero 3s for VTech last year, yes? I don’t think he’s exactly known for his 3 point shooting. Enough with this “form” stuff. We’re still waiting for Kaden’s wonderful “form” to translate into more efficient shooting, for example.
In the case of big men, when they attempt a 3 from the top of the key it means we have one less rebounder down low.
The point is only that you can easily tell from a scrimmage when someone’s defense is PJ Hayes like as well as when someone has potential to be a plus defender.Any college athlete can tell you, yes, scrimmages are played with intensity. More than you get in practice. But they mean nothing. There is nothing as intense as a real game that gets counted on your record. Scrimmages are great, but they aren't that.
Actually he was left wide open on 2 of them which is why he took them.Probably one less rebounder down low for the other team.
