SIAP: Your thoughts on Oregon coach going for 2 pt conversion 8 minutes into the 1st qtr?

Is this overconfidence, is it brash that yeah I can call this play and do this, is it stupid. I think Oregon Coach Lanning is just so in love with his offensive toys/team that he thought they would score a bunch, a terrible way for a coach to think when you are playing against another team.

ORegon missed the 2 pt conversion and was chasing the missing 1 pt conversion pt the whole game. I came in to watch the game about mid-2nd qtr and the score was 6-3 Oregon, but not 7-3. So now UCLA can tie the game with a FGoal.

Later, UCLA scores a TD to go up 10-6 and it could have been a score of 10-7 and ORegon could tie it with a field goal, but no, they needed to TD or 2 FGoals

And then UCLA goes ahead 17-6, oops, now Oregon needs a FG, TD, and 2 pt conversion just to tie.

Final score 17-15 as ORegon got the FG to make it 17-9 and then a TD but missed the two point conversion.

Would you coach like this?

That's kind of common for them, some teams and coaches just go for two very early on. I remember Kirk's first game at Columbus we scored a TD on the first drive and got the 2 pointer, so even though they went down and scored we were still up 8-7 at least for a bit.

Never chase points early , it tends to come back and bite You late
They weren't really chasing points. They took a 6-3 lead on a gift TD and thought that they were the Oregon of the past that regularly scored 50 points a game, so going for 2 just for fun was rarely a problem. I'm sure they were really regretting it in the 4th quarter.

I want to be up by 4 as opposed to 3 100% of the time and not give the point , It is absolutely chasing points not taking the 98% sure point to chase 2 and it came back to bite Them, if they kick it in the 1st they do not have to go for 2 late to tie and lose by 2 failed conversions because some moronic fad .

A moronic fad is a good way to put it. It reminds me of the coach, maybe a high school coach, who used onside kicks every time they kicked off and more occasional fake punts to "get" extra possessions but that coach had the facts and numbers to back up his strategy. If you have a great defense try the fake punt from midfield and the same with onside kicks.

different play - but anyone else think UCLA was crazy to accept the 5 yard intentional offside that Lanning had instructed his player to do late in the game?

UCLA was facing a 2nd-and-1 around the 2-minute mark with Oregon trailing and holding two timeouts. By committing the penalty before the snap, Oregon forced the game clock to stop without having to burn one of their remaining timeouts. Conceding the first down immediately saved Oregon roughly 40 seconds of game clock that UCLA otherwise would have run down on a subsequent 2nd-and-short conversion. (Pulled off AI)

I thought the exact same thing. After bowl games forget who but said same thing that Vandy should’ve jumped offsides after gronowski got 9 yard run on our game clinching first down.

I would have denied it if I was ucla. Kudos to their P and special teams for pinning inside the 10 and players being smart enough not to touch it until refs blew the whistle.

I guess we have different definitions of "chasing points." I think of "chasing points" as going for 2 after missing an earlier PAT, then not converting it and then spending the entire game having 2 or fewer points than you should because you've spent the game trying to make up for the missed PAT. I don't think we really disagree on anything else.

The object is to score more points than your opponent. I don't have a problem with going for 2 at any point in the game, but you had better make it. If not, too many Monday AM QB's around.
