Got to make sure there is no confusion since Missouri thinks we are the atlanta Hawks.
Ben McCollum has made me proud to support Iowa basketball again, win or lose. Why? Because of the Iowa culture he’s brought back. He’s a high character guy who values the right things—particularly toughness and heart. I never felt that way with Steve Alford or Fran. And those qualities—toughness and heart—always characterized Tom Davis teams. It’s great to have that back.

I liked Fran but his absolute refusal to hire someone to help them improve defensively was ego driven and cost his teams, repeatedly, year after year. I wasn't sad to see him go. Wish him well, he came to Iowa when they were at their lowest level in, ever? But, bye.
Fran was not actively looking for those type of guys. Sure some came through the program, that’s inevitable. Ben says that’s the first prerequisite for guys on his teams. Pretty easy to see that by the way his team competed in year 1 compared to 15yrs of Fran ball
In 15 years, or whatever it was, those guys were few and far between.
Fran’s teams generally being soft is not debatable.
Ben won more NCAA tournament games in his first year than Fran won, combined, in 15 years with all those great players that you listed.
It’s a tragedy that that group of guys didn’t win more in the NCAA tourney
I don’t know that they were few and far between. I think Fran’s philosophy held a lot of players back who would’ve excelled in Ben’s system
During the Fran era, “toughness” was generally defined as “a willingness to run one’s mouth.”
There were exceptions to that, but it was generally true.
They had heart, but you can’t deny they didn’t play great team defense.
Fran lost to Richmond in the NCAA first round despite having the National Player of the Year. But then we do know Spiders can be menacing. LOL
Interesting, I can remember during the Alford years (when we had Luke Recker) the fan base blasting Alford when he complained about the lack of toughness. The blame for Recker's injured leg was put on Alford for pushing toughness.
FYI - I'm not a fan of Alford and not defending him. I just remember toughness or lack thereof was being preached by Alford. See the attached article with Izzo saying them thing.

That's funny. Wasn't one of those wins a "play in" game? That's not a flexx. I'll rephrase it, in Ben's short, 2 years as a D1 coach, he has as many tourney wins as Fran did in 15 years at Iowa and a much better winning percentage.

not disputing Ben's a hell of a coach, and tournament coach. but just think that facts matter.
Then please list Fran's overall record to Ben's, albeit, short overall record in the D1 NCAA basketball tournament. Like I said, I liked Fran and am greatfull for what he did when he came in to the dumpster fire Lick left Iowa. However, I'm glad Beth made the decision to move on.

To be fair Keegan was a consensus 1st team AA, and a POY finalist but he was not NPOTY. Garza was gone already to the league. Fran did however manage to get blown out by Oregon in the year Garza was NPOTY
OK, how about .26 wins in the tourney a year vs. 3 wins in one year. Fran was awful in the tourney

i wasn't questioning any of that, just that the facts didn't back up the OP's claim.
coach McCollum won a tournament game at Drake the year before last, so he matched Fran’s 15 years at Iowa, in his first two years as D1 coach.
