If you want to see why I hate international soccer, tune into NBC at 10:30 and look at the lineup Liverpool is having to play in one of the biggest games of the season. No Dom, Gakpo, or Issac. All of them were hurt playing in another useless International competition.

I'm going to be an American Message Board Genius here, but why don't they just have fewer international competitions? What's the need for all the little tournaments here and there, and separate continental qualifiers for the World Cup that just repeat the matchups from the continental cups?

I'm sure the answer is money, but do fans really care? If they changed it only have continental championships, and have those be the qualifiers for the World Cup, how many fans would miss it?

It is all about the money. FIFA makes little or nothing from league play and even Champions League. But they do from international competitions. So they keep creating new ways to milk that cow. Expand World Cup to 48 teams and talking about even more expansion. Create the Nations Leagues (which are overly redundant). Etc. Never mind that players may be playing close to 80 matches a year. And yes, most fans care a lot about the international competitions.

I did legitimately try to carry my soccer enthusiasm from the WC into some kind of interest in the great global leagues.

I understand the game at this level reasonably well, played it as a youth, respect and am even awed by the talent and feats of the great players.

But it’s still like watching grass grow for me to watch some team based 3,800 miles away play another team based 4,000 miles away in a regular season league game where there’s a chance no more than 2 or 3 (or 0) goals will be scored. I just can’t do it, but happy for those of you who can.

Also fairly ironic that Liverpool fans were calling City cheats when 30 years ago they robbed the entire country of playing European football for 5 years because of their behavior
