How is it the UGA Bama game is still scheduled?

Tuscaloosa is currently right in rhe projected path. The Storm should hit Tuscaloosa Saturday morning, so the evening might not be so bad, weather wise.

But people have to travel. And first responders will likely be very busy. I don't even think the UGA Football team should be travelling. So far, all I have seen is that College Gameday will be indoors, and no tailgating before noon.

As for Gameday, I would not want to be in Coleman Colliseum if a tornado spins out of this.

Yeah it's kinda crazy. Assuming the storm is as bad as they say. It will be interesting to see how many fans show. I bet there is more than a few empty seats.

I was in school at Alabama in 1988 when they postponed a game against Texas A&M due to hurricane Gilbert. They announced early Wednesday morning the game was off so that no one would travel.

Of course, Gilbert wound up being so powerful that it never tuned North and just moved across Mexico into the Pacific. That's when Bill Curry picked up the nickname "Chicken" Curry.

Meanwhile, in actual Alabama, our forecasters are saying the heavy stuff rain-wise is predicted to come through starting about 9 or 10 PM tonight, and the likely area to have any real severe stuff is about a 2.5 hour drive to the east of Tuscaloosa.
This is all still using the modern elevated, etc measurements and not the 1980's radar version where red actually meant problems, and not just heavy rain.

I'm literally having a conversation with my teen about which volunteer shift he should work to avoid more of the prediction of light rain: 12-2, or 2-4.
The only first responder impact I can see from this football game would be the highway patrol. So, if I was in Byrne's shoes, I'd try to bring in police from other municipalities who are very unlikely to be impacted (Hoover loves to rent our guys out and has a huge roster), and free up the HP.

The answer is not to move the game.

I think things will be relatively safe by gametime. I just dont think you should be encouraging a large number of people to drive into a storm path.

And those first responders from less impacted areas may be needed further South.

I mean there’s still plenty of time to postpone and reschedule. Athens is what, 3 hours from Tuscaloosa? This is not going to majorly affect the travel of UGA. If they get in the bus and get halfway there and have to turn around, who really cares?

They’ll still certainly move the game if it becomes obvious that conditions will be perpetually unplayable. Weather can shift though, so they are probably just delaying the decision as long as they can.

I don't see how you re-seat people that have tickets for the AL stadium to another stadium although I've seen several mentioned.

I meant more along the lines of moving the date of the game.

Find a weekend where both teams have either a bye or a nonconference patsy. Cancel whatever meaningless nonconference games need to be cancelled. If such an overlapping weekend doesn’t exist, move a few other league games around to accomodate, or just agree to play it the same weekend as the SEC championship unless one of the two teams is in the championship.

I saw Mercedes Benz stadium mentioned and moving it to Athens both discussed yesterday but couldn't figure out how that would work

Isn't the storm tracking more east now? So the Atl option could be worse.

I'm just surprised gameday is still on. When That airs, the weather could still be around. Also it seems unnecessary.

More like 5. I suspect UGA is en route to Birmingham or leaving shortly.

It looks like the main impact of the storm will be pushing east of Tuscaloosa and west of BHM around 1:00 PM. Hopefully by 3 PM it’s well past there.
I don’t think by 6:30 they’ll have much to deal with other than some rain and gusty winds.
Delaying to 8:00 PM may be a good idea or even kickoff at 9 PM
Remember our game vs USM in Hattiesburg in 2015?
9:05 PM Kick.

Is it wrong to wish a twister comes along and carries both teams and fanbases away to Oz -- forever.

Especially all those in Crimson.

Wrong.
Right at 5 hours and that doesn’t include a bathroom or gas stop.
Lol. It’s 4 hrs 33 minutes on Google maps, which assumes you’ll drive 65-70 mph down I-20….which nobody does.

I have made that drive many, many times in right at 4 hrs and a few times in less than 4 hours, going 76-78mph on the interstate typically.

Both teams will be playing in Atlanta, anyway, for the SEC title, just post-pone it until then****

We're working on reducing concussions right now. We'll start looking at hurricanes and tornadoes once we get this wrapped up.

The issue isn't whether the weather will cooperate by game time. People evacuating the coast need the roads. People evacuating the coast need the hotel rooms. Mass evacuations require the assistance of first responders, less people on the road who don't need to be, and for the availability of hotel rooms a few hours north of the coast, to be efficient. Trying to play one of the biggest football games of the season right in the middle of the evacuation route is just dumb. They should cancel the game for no other reason than to free up the hotel rooms for evacuees. If you've ever had to evacuate with a family and small children and have no family that lives north of you, your only option is a hotel. They are basically saying -"Let the evacuees drive to Georgia or Tennessee - we got ourselves a ballgame to play."

While well intentioned, that isn’t particularly reasonable.

This storm developed quickly, and by the time anyone even started evacuating they were already inside the 24 hr cancellation windows for most hotels in the Tuscaloosa area. You are basically saying hundreds of private businesses all have to turn away tens of millions of dollars in guaranteed income out of the goodness of their hearts and just to be humanitarians. The world just doesn’t work that way, and never has.

Also just logistically speaking, there are no south to north major thoroughfares that pass through Tuscaloosa. 20/59 is more northeast / southwest, and is actually going to carry people closer to the storm instead of further away. I’d expect evacuees to be sticking to I-55, I-65, and perhaps US-45 in MS and I-85 in Georgia. And anyone who was going to evacuate have already traveled these routes anyway, so it’s not particularly relevant for hotel availability this weekend.

There's 0 chance the Ttown hoteliers willingly pass up two to three night minimum stays at exorbitant prices (which the market will bear) to magnanimously house evacuees at a normal rate. ZERO.

Didn't a Florida game get moved to the road teams stadium the week of a game a few years ago?
