Interesting take if the NCAA goes to a 24 team playoff. Interesting with a Rutgers mention even.

Saw tha article and have said the same here multiple times in why I like 24 teams. It gives a realistic meaningful goal for any school in the P4 to reach.

Plus with all the millions spent on coaches and players schools need to have something to show for it. Bowls just don’t cut it. More on campus playoff games will be fun too.

I am for a 24 team playoff but I don’t see us ever making it out of the B1G.

It may be a minority view and will never happen by away up a 2nd tier playoff for 25-48.

- Conference champs who don’t make top 24 in
- each conf gets at least 1 in if they have none in top 24
- all games played at home stadiums except championship at neutral field

If RU made the 2nd tier playoff I’d watch every game and be psyched if we won!!!!

RU would have a good shot at it

I would welcome a 24 team playoff if it made all 10 conference champions and
the Independents ranked in the top 25 automatic qualifiers .
( the exception would be : any conference champion with a losing record disqualified and replaced with an at large pick)

Why not, for the most part just get CFP ranked and you have a high likelihood of being in.

Put aside IU. Who knows how the season will finish for UCLA but currently they’re ranked and this is from total dysfunction just recently.

After Oregon their hardest games are Michigan, USC, Wisconsin, Minnesota. That would be a very doable schedule to finish the season ranked. I’ve heard talk on pods depending on how they look against Oregon people think they may even have an outside dark horse chance at a 12 team playoff let alone 24. If there was a 24 team playoff this year (they’re looking to have it done for next year) and you were a Bruin fan wouldn’t you have hope to make it.

NW has a pretty tough schedule with Iowa, OSU, Oregon still left and that’s after pushing IU to the limit. If not for such a hard schedule, the way they’ve looked this year they might have had a chance to finish the season ranked.

Even Vandy had gotten ranked out of the SEC.

Since the CFP rankings started I think only 3 P4 teams have never finished being in the final CFP rankings. Rutgers, Maryland, Cal (edit correction: Duke, Purdue, Kansas, BC and surprisingly Nebraska as well)

It seems harder to stay out of the rankings for so long than to get in them.

People are too defeated but I’m not. I’ve said this before, in 26 years (when we started to support football at least semi seriously) we’ve only tried a couple options. A and A1 (Schiano/Flood) and B (Ash), that’s it. I can understand being defeated if we exhausted so many options from A-Z and still nothing works. But we haven’t even scratched the surface of what other options are out there that may work. We won’t know until we try.

I just love the idea of CFP games at home stadiums as it SHOULD be!!!
NYE bowl games were great but they were 1 game and an event…asking the winning teams fans to have to travel to a different site after advancing is not ideal.
I would LOVE to have a Rutgers home playoff game—one can dream

I think there are more teams that have never been CFP ranked: BC, Kansas, Purdue, must be more from B12

UCLA was in worse shape than us a few years ago even though they beat us. What separates them from where we are is they had a very, very low paid HC with a minuscule buy out. Basically the opposite of us in that regard. It allowed them to hire a very bright young coach with big future. It’s what we need. Desperately.

Eliminate all remaining bowl games and conference championships. Then and only then does a 24 team playoff make sense.

Including all 10 conference champions will not happen in a 24-team field. You would need at least a 32-team field for that. The playoffs are essentially controlled by the SEC and B1G, so they would need to have a chance to get 25% of the slots (6 teams) and 14 wild cards won't permit that.

My idea for a 24- team playoff would mostly eliminate the Pollsters / CFP Selection Committee (the SEC has not made a Championship Game since expanding to 12 because "expert" opinions have been minimized). The top 3 teams from each P4 Conference get automatic bids. The G6 gets 3 automatic bids with the G6 Commissioners selecting the teams. That selection process could include 3 Play In games featuring the 6 conference champs (American vs MAC, Pac-12 vs C-USA, MWC vs Sun Belt). That would leave 9 wild cards, which would likely get filled exclusively by P4 teams. The B1G and SEC could both get 6 teams into the playoffs. While I doubt this will ever happen, it would provide playoff opportunities for every team in FBS.

Play In Games from last year: 9-4 Western Michigan at 10-3 Tulane, 10-3 Kennesaw State at 7-5 Washington State (Pac-12 only had 2 teams and would be a stronger team starting this season), and 12-1 James Madison at 9-4 Boise State.
P4 auto bids:
ACC: Duke, Miami, Virginia
Big XII: Texas Tech, BYU, Utah
B1G: Indiana, Ohio State, Oregon
SEC: Georgia, Ole Miss, Texas A&M
Likely Wildcards:
Oklahoma, Alabama, Notre Dame, Texas, USC, Vanderbilt, Arizona, Michigan, (Houston / Georgia Tech / Iowa)

SEC gets 7 in, B1G gets 5 or 6 in, Big XII gets 4 or 5 in, and the ACC gets 3 or 4 in.

Complaints would be that North Texas get a play in game instead of Washington State.

Thanks I think you’re correct, did a Google AI and it gave me the wrong answer. It confused apppearing in the final rankings vs appearing at all in them. I think Duke and funny enough Nebraska hasn’t also. Regardless, that’s 8 out of 68 so still a large majority have been ranked at the end.

Others in the B12 have finished ranked like ISU, KSU, Cincy, Houston, UCF, Arizona, Colorado, ASU etc have finished ranked in the CFP…did a one by one look up of potential suspects this time instead of a general question lol.

So it’s still way harder to not be ranked for so long than be ranked…schools like Vandy, NW, IU, WF, Illinois, Cuse, UVA have been able to do it. So there’s no reason not to hope for the future.

I think parity within the P4 is better now than the past so the likelihood of appearing is even better than when the CFP first started. Some of these lower rung schools have done this more recently, I don't think that's a coincidence with regards to the CFB landscape and NIL/transfer portal.

The current thinking is the Conference Championship Games will go away. Originally the B1G wanted to have 3 (ACC and Big XII) or 4 (B1G and SEC) automatic bids and the CCG would be replaced by 2 play in games (3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5 or 2 vs 5 and 3 vs 4), but that idea appears to be rethought.

I think some bowl games are going to exist but I'd guess the number of them would be reduced.

They won't go away until the TV money dries up. The Bowl game viewership has seen a big of an uptick in the last several seasons because people are used to watching Bowl Games in the last two weeks of the season. That may continue after a playoff expansion to 24 teams until people no longer watch 4-8 Eastern Michigan take on 5-7 Coastal Carolina in the Salute To Veterans Bowl on or around December 15.

Conference champ games are definitely going away if the money is there. The threshold number that needs to be beat is 300M to replace the financial value of all the conf champ games. So if extra games from the expanded playoff exceed that then expansion will happen and that's what they're expecting, probably as soon as next year.

As to the bowl games, what I've heard on pods is some will remain but conferences might take control of them and bowls won't have specific tie ins to any particular conference. They will work together to create better matchups. So that helps but it's still an inconsequential bowl and if players sit out and coaches are leaving, it loses something. People still watch though.

From the article:

In one proposal shared with high-level administrators, a consortium of 10 bowl games — each pitting power conference programs — would be created and potentially sold on the open market, with its television rights controlled by the conferences themselves instead of the bowls. Presumably, these games will be played in existing bowls, but their participants would vary as the bowl system untethers from its traditional conference affiliations.

What's not to like? Five teams from each power league get tossed into a bucket, paired together based on attractive matchups, meet in interesting, new cities and make more cash than they currently generate.

After all, the top-10 most-watched non-CFP bowls last year averaged a rating of 5.8 million viewers, per Bowl Season. That's more than the average rating in the NBA's Western Conference finals last year, which produced the champion Oklahoma City Thunder.

The consortium plan provides flexibility in matchups, potentially incorporates new television partners (Apple, Amazon, Fox?) and, at least for the power leagues, limits the amount of bowl options at a time of opt-outs (perhaps not all bowl-eligible conference teams participate in a bowl?).

The conversation about bowl eligibility — 6-6 or a return to 7-5 — is expected to continue, too. It's been a long-running discussion.

Despite most bowl contracts expiring this year — bowls hold contracts with TV partners and specific conferences — many of them are extending deals by only a year given the uncertainty of the CFP expansion conversation, which continues as the SEC and Big Ten disagreement rages onward.

In fact, the number of CFP teams may determine exactly what happens with this power-conference bowl proposal. A move to 24 teams — the Big Ten's plan — may see very few power conference bowl games existing in the future.

No more conference affiliations. No more bowl games controlling TV rights and league payouts. It's unclear if bowls will retain title sponsorship rights or ticketing oversight.

But a model currently exists in shifting TV rights and sponsorships to another entity controlled by the conferences: the CFP. It owns the media rights and title sponsorship of the six bowls that are part of the playoff's quarterfinal and semifinal rotation (Orange, Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Peach and Cotton).

Look at us, talking at length about making a 24 team playoff. Did I miss the fact that our football program is one of the worst in Power 4?

An expansion to 24 teams makes sense. The smaller tier bowl games should go away along with conf champ games. Programs and coaching staffs will be measured on making or not making the playoff as it should be. They need to improve the playoff selection committee, they need more football expertise and understanding on the committee. There will always be some bias, but if you get high integrity people it is possible to have a fairly objective committee.
