Former Super Bowl-winning NFL head coach Jon Gruden has openly expressed a strong desire to return to coaching—specifically at the college level and in the SEC—and his name has repeatedly surfaced in coaching searches for major programs, though he has not yet landed a college job.

Current Status and Interest

  • Expressed Intent: Gruden has publicly stated he wants to coach again, remarking during an appearance with the Georgia Bulldogs that he would "die to coach in the SEC".

Negotiate some kind of deal with Beamer that keeps him in the football program as a paid employee so we don't have to buy him out and make Gruden the offer of the "SEC challenge" he's looking for.
Wouldn't we still be spending the same amount of money if we pay Beamer not to coach as we would if we simply bought him out over time?

Not necessarily. Negotiate a recruiting/HR type job at a pay rate certainly lower than HC rate in lieu of a buyout which still provides him support for his family and keeps him involved in the football program "he loves and where he wants to be".

Oh, gotcha. Of course that would depend on Beamer voluntarily agreeing to take a lower-paying job (which he theoretically might, if this is his dream program). More critically, it would depend on the new HC agreeing to have the old "fired" HC still hanging around the program. I think that's going to be the rub.

That's true, but if Gruden really wants the job, he can help clear the way to make it happen and Beamer is not a bad recruiting coordinator.

Gruden has been going to be the coach at Tennessee for 20 years. There have been plenty of head coach jobs open up in the SEC since 2021, why hasn't he been hired? Also, Gruden has never coached a college team before. I guess OJT is the way of the world at SC.

We can just wait for that highly regarded college coach who is dying to come to SC as we all turn grey, go bald or need a cane to walk to the mail box.

Why not? Any particular reason or....?

I mean, my post was somewhat serious. This team needs a coach who's serious about football. IMHO, of the coaches who are out there, you have to start narrowing down the list of which ones actually want the challenge of the SEC. Then you have to narrow it down more and more, etc....

Come up with any name you want but of all the coaches out there, the name Jon Gruden is miles and miles above and beyond anyone else you could name. I'm betting we could get him on the cheaper end of a deal too. Right up our alley. So, why not?

The issue with these big name coaches is that their name can't do anything anymore. Install Gruden in 2010 versus today and you might get on a recruiting roll. Not now. All you're going to do is pay out the nose for his "mean face look."

No thanks. According to Wikipedia he was fired for writing racist, misogynistic and homophobic emails. His results in the NFL were also inconsistent. I don't think he would be welcome at any college right now. (or at any time - otherwise, he would have been hired by now)
