Just huge. His quotes are great reading, too.

Congrats to CCC and the staff for closing this one. If you wonder about the state of NU hoops recruiting, it looks like this. DON'T REST!!!

Great decision for you, too, Jeremiah. Welcome to Evanston. Can hardly wait to see what you can do at WR.

I agree that this is a huge get. The sad thing to me is that in the current environment all we can count on is one year from him. Singleton was a big get yet left despite supposedly wanting to stay. If he is as good as advertised his agent will get offers, and then it's just a crap shoot whether NU can retain him.

Hoping for the best.....

Some good recruiting classes the past couple of years and the start of a really good one now. Of course, we lost Singleton from last year's class, but if we can keep this nucleus of guys and supplement with a portal player or two to round things out, we might see competitive ball back in Evanston in a year or two. This year is going to be rough though.

I think that, last year, we over-valued technical talent/skills and undervalued team chemistry. We are going to see lots better chemistry this year, so I am more hopeful that the year will be better than “rough”

Not doubting you, but how do you know there will be better chemistry this year? We don't even know two-thirds of these guys yet.

I certainly don’t know, but removing AP is one good reason to think it will happen. And then removing a lame duck KJ. And then even Reid - he was a bit of a poor decision maker on offense and a huge liability on defense - I’m betting that wore mentally on the other guys.

I think it makes sense to assume that, but we won't really know until at least part-way through the season if the chemistry is better. My concern is that despite the best intentions, we will have a serious talent deficiency this year. I predict this may be a very likeable team who plays with great effort, but still keeps coming up short. We'll see. The transfer portal makes every year a bit of a crap shoot.

But, looking forward (if we can still do that in this era), we have an exciting point guard and likely leader in West. Hodge and Ghai are really exciting freshmen prospects. And now you add Profit to next year's squad and you see the next core forming, if we can keep them.

Coach and his returning players will be challenged to create and maintain that team chemistry. Continuity is one of the bigger things I think you lose in this portal era.

When we had a team featuring Boo, Chase, Ty, and Big Matt, the new kids were coming into a strong, existing culture featuring senior leadership and success. The same was true when that team was led by Brooks, Nick, and Big Matt. The promise of that continuation fell apart last year when Nick was the only returning starter and we had five freshmen and three transfers with their own baggage. This year we've got Angelo, Jake, and Gill to take up that mantle in the face of four graduate students and several other transfers who might not be ready to buy into what the sophomores and junior are selling.

Am I correct in that there are only three returning Cats this year?

Agreed, though I think the defense was the real problem last year and we would appear to be in a better place there this year.

Not if you believe the guy who reviewed all the incoming transfers a couple of months ago.

Fair enough; forgot how negative he was on Karasinski’s defense. It’s all relative, in a sense (when comparing to prior NU teams), but removing Reid will help us a lot, and Martinelli struggled a lot defensively. Hopefully, we will also benefit without all of Singleton’s hand check fouls.

That did drive me nuts last season. I kept screaming at him through my tv to quit putting two hands on people.

My worry is, I could have written the exact same thing before last season. And as losses piled up, that very quickly began to feel like a very unlikeable team (in large part because of chemistry issues with transfers). I hope this year isn’t more of the same.

This may be unpopular but I believe last years under performance was a coaching problem as much as a player performance issue,NU could not defend dribble penetration, forcing Paige to leave his man , resulting in “easy” baskets. NU never employed an alternate defense. Paige would have been a defensive plus if he could have been somewhere near the rim instead of 20’ from the rim. Similarly , NU should have run their offense through Paige more, this would have helped Martinelli also. It will be a long time before NU has a big with Paige’s skills and the coaches inability to capitalize on this potential advantage was difficult to explain

Perhaps. The fact Page didn’t do well in his other places suggests your hypothesis is less likely true. Reid was also a liability and allowed dribble penetration too.
