From Leistikow:

A lot of media questions today about the West Coast trip, but honestly it shouldn't be that big of a deal logistically. Team will leave on Thursday, typically its off day, to fly to Seattle. No practice adjustments. Film time compressed but that's the case for both teams.

Addison Ostrenga: “Honestly, the biggest thing I've learned from these trips is just treat it like a normal game. We stay in a hotel even on home games, so it's the same routine every single week. Obviously, we're traveling on ... Thursday to go to the game, but besides that, it's the same routine, same meals in the hotels, same meetings that we have (for) a normal game.”

Iowa OL Kade Pieper: “It's a business trip. You're there to get in and get out. You're not out there to sightsee in Seattle.”

It does benefit Iowa that were in the middle of the country when flying to either coast. Bigger issue for UCLA to fly to Maryland and vis versa.....

Didn't Hayden Fry have one of his team travel the same day as a game before? I want to say Tulsa? Maybe 1996?

and they lost
Not sure the background on the travel, i was only 13 but yes that was 96.

Never really thought about it before because these road games haven't happened in my adult life, but WTF was Iowa going on the road to play Tulsa for in the first place??

coz east coast games no matter how late fall well within west coast “normal” hours
west coast late games fall well outside east coast normal hours. physical performance is affected.
i have tried this personally. for instance if you run regularly during daylight hours time yourself one time at say 9pm. for me there is a difference

Seems like every time our guys start with this business trip stuff it doesn't turn out well for us.

We played them at Kinnick in 89, 93 and 97, so probably just a 3 for 1 deal worked out in advance. Kind of like playing at Miami (OH) in 2002 amongst hosting them in 2001 and 2003, looks weird on paper in 2026 but non strange back then.

Damn, I completely overlooked that one. I was 19 watching the ESPN Gamecast (or whatever it was called) in my dorm room sophomore year in Omaha. Was that the last non-con road game to a lower level conference team? Thinking back I feel like that might have been the last non con game on the road to anyone other than Iowa state.

Edit: I guess recency bias got me. Forgot about the home and aways with Syracuse, Arizona st, Arizona, and Pittsburgh. Just seems like way longer we've been on the 9 game schedule that leaves Iowa state and 2 (more) craptastic games.

Well usually Iowa plays like absolute garbage on the west coast so I don’t expect much different.

I have had some real good trips though watching Iowa on the west coast, so can’t complain too much.

Kirk Ferentz is 0-3 in games played west of the Rocky Mountains that kicked off at or after 8:00 PM CST. I really hope this game isn't like those 3 games before.

There was a time when teams played 11 games and alternated between 5 and 6 home games every year.
