Cloniger: Carolina can't afford to fire Beamer

Typical. Says we're looking at a $50M price tag to fire Shane and staff and hire a new coach and we don't have it. I read also three of the school's biggest donors died this year: McNair, Ingram and Rice. Shane would never resign so we get held hostage by a crappy coach. Almost comical it's so maddening.

I didn't see any of that mentioned in the linked article.

The $50M price tag is in the Cloniger column under "Head Man" paragraph. Says his source is close to the program that we don't have the money and that the man that could have fit the bill died (assuming Rice). The three donors I read elsewhere.

"If Beamer is let go Sunday, USC owes him in excess of $24 million. Then there’s the staff and the roster turnover at the end of the year, plus a new coach … USC would be looking at around a $50 million fee, and the school simply doesn’t have it.
While there would always be a chance somebody would pony up and pay the bill, who would it be? The only man with that kind of scratch and willingness to help is sadly no longer with us. But again, I was told it would be wildly, wildly shocking if a move was made after Kentucky.
Caller has always been airtight on info. Completely trustworthy. In a position that would know. I have to believe what I was told."

Ironically, if we cannot afford to fire him, the only other alternative is to commit more financial resources to NIL or the coaching staff.

Pretty much what we have figured, too expensive; and that is just considering the $27 million. Maybe after they do this a third time (with football alone) they’ll figure out how to not over pay and over extend a coach.

Depressing. For the foreseeable future we will be crap. Second year in a row we are the worst in the SEC. That's a helluva legacy.

This coaching staff cost $50 million????

Edit: I guess that includes the payout everyone is determined to pay. Instead of self reporting, which is the Carolina MO isn't it?

I cannot remember, but back when Tanner gave Beamer this huge contract with the $27 million buyout, who was he afraid would hire Beamer away from us? I do not remember anyone really wanting Beamer when we hired him and after we hired him.
I think there were rumors he would get the VT head coach job but that was obviously false.

Coach's agents are real agents who went up against a fake AD. ALL of our problems are self induced.

All the big donors can't be dead. Surely they plan on selling all those new luxury boxes to somebody. I assume they took pre-orders.

There's gotta be a smarter way to do this. One good season, and we price ourselves out of being able to fire the coach.
How does this end?
There is and Idk why the people in the positions to do so don't know that. Muschamp was given an extension after the 2018 season, completely unwarranted and the cracks were visibly forming that season. I was done with him after the Florida game but we had to endure two more seasons of it and they still paid him $15 million to be a loser. I recall hearing Tanner asked why the buyout was so high he said it was simply market rate. Technically he wasn't wrong as "market rate" was 65-75% of an hc's contract. But of course SC went with 75%, meanwhile UGA had Smart at 65% at that same time, for reference.

If they wanted to give Beamer something more after 2024, no argument on the premise, but more than doubling his salary and locking him in until 2030 was completely idiotic. Also consider the contract includes a raise every season. That's right, he gets a raise for this.

Imagine if VT had paid us his buyout and taken him off our hands back then, it would have been the best deal we ever got on a coach in our history.
A coworker of mine is a VT grad and I recall him joking that they were going to steal Beamer from us. Man that would have been too easy.

Carolina actually has the means to fire Beamer, but they're just too stubborn to swallow the bitter pill of their own mistake. That mistake? Making Tanner the A/D and then letting him oversee two obviously botched head coaching hires.Honestly, someone should have stopped him from even boarding that plane to "interview" Muschamp. Any serious BOT or University President should have stepped in immediately. It should have been: Tanner, you're going to interview *who*? Absolutely not!

If they keep him then the NIL budget needs to be cut to near zero. Don’t waste resources. 2-10 or 4-8 is pretty much the same in the big picture.

He botched more than two head coaching hires. It’s more like 6 head coaching hires botched…

One does have to wonder how much of an NIL hit the team will take if Beamer is retained. Lots of small donors dropping out may make an impact, but what happens of a few larger donors drop out as well?

We might not be able to afford to bring back Sellers and Harbor.

Has any school figured out how to do that? LSU, A&M, UNC ... ?

His agent floated a couple of schools that might be interested. I don't remember the schools, but I do remember his name mentioned in connection with openings ... and not just VT.
