any clue on how to stop Jeremiah Smith?

Keep him off the field by having long, ball controlled drives.
This is the correct answer. The only way to limit a player of Smith's caliber is to do everything possible to limit the number of possessions OSU's offense has the ball. This not only means making sure our offense possesses the ball, but also, when OSU has the ball, to keep everything in front of us and make sure they take 8, 9, 10 plays to get down the field, and then holding them to 0 or 3 in the redzone.

Beyond that, you're not going to stop him with 1 player, 2 players, etc.

The average college football game typically features 12 possessions per team. If we can keep drives alive and also force them to have to take long drives on their end, we can probably reduce that to 10 possessions. If we can force just 1 turnover, that takes it down to 9 possessions. If out of those 9 possessions, we can force them to punt on 3, that takes us to 6 possessions. If out of those 6 possessions we can hold them on 4th down in the redzone, that takes us to 5 possessions. If in those 5 possessions we allow 3 TDs and 2 FGs, that' 27 points. Honestly, I think that's probably the best we can do. So we need to find a way to score 28.

Hawks need to play the greatest game of keep away ever on Saturday. Smith can't burn us if he's not on the field. They key to victory is long, sustained drives that burn as much clock as possible. 8-10 minute drives will be the sweet spot. Can't settle for FGs either, have to score TDs.

Double him high and low, take him away and hope you can cover the other 3 or 4 receivers but that means going man to man pretty much
Double him with your 2 and 3 cover guys and single cover their 2 with your 1. Belichik did that vs the Colts and Marvin Harrison never really had big games against them.

Considering our lack of DL talent:

Phil must blitz all LBs and DBs every play and hope for tipped or inaccurate passes from Sayin.

Smith may have more reception yards Saturday than our our leading wide receiver at season's end.

They have at least two RBs better than anyone on Iowa's roster and the D line got bullied yesterday. Hawks will probably need to score 35 to have a chance
No they are not.. B&J Jackson are good but I’d still take our RB’s over them. You make them sound like Judkins and Hendo

You know that’s not going to happen. We’re going to try and keep everything in front like we always do and make them go the distance. Against teams with bad QB play that works. Against the best player in college football and a guy who completes 70% of his passes not sure it will. Phil’s going to have a good game plan, I’m sure of that but there’s a reason we’re 14 pt dogs at home.

Probably more of a matter of containing, than stopping.

And for that, a few have eluded to it, but it would help, as always, to Run The Ball

Going to have to pick our spots on blitzes. You’re not going to stop him, but you just need to get them off the field when you get a chance.

We have to effectively throw the ball. We won't be able to win running because we don't have the line to blow those guys away. Even if we do, they will still stack the box. We need Brown to have an even better day than last week.

I know, dumb comment here, but 1st downs and winning the TOP is an absolute must. We can't run two times for 3 yards and hope for the best on 3rd and 7. We may have to pass 3 times but whatever it takes to move the chains. Lots of play action, screens, levels, whatever. Let the pass set up the run.

Their rushing attack is not that impressive, but holy hell, 217 yards receiving last week against a decent to solid Illinois team is something else.
Yes. BLITZ. I said before the game that Parker couldn't let Sayin sit back and play catch, but for the most part, that's exactly what he did, and Iowa paid the price. Anybody would have completed all those passes when it was like playing catch in the backyard. Conservative defense, conservative offense, lose to Ohio State. The formula is easy.

Phil will blitz against teams he knows won't burn his secondary.

He's so in sync with Kirk in not wanting to give up big plays that it causes him to go into turtle mode against these top level teams, when the correct choice is screaming in his face to be aggressive and live with the consequences (see Brian Flores/Vikings defense).
