and effectively rips, or pushes the opposing players helmet off, should the player have to leave the field in that situation?

I understand the premise of the rule, but seems overly punitive to the affected team (as in, both teams essentially penalized)

If your helmet comes off due to a penalty (facemask or hands to the face) you do not have to leave the field for a play.
