Worst rush defensive performance since the MSU game in 1997?

MSU had two 200-yd rushers in that game and ended the game with 452 yards rushing (441 from the combined total of the two running backs). PSU was ranked #4 at the time and lost the game 49-14.

Those old enough to remember have seen ugly before.
MSU Coach was Nick Saban.

Not sure the NW Coach is at that level, but he has done a good job of building a tough team.

The lack of toughness is what hurts the most watching the game. I saw alot of our defensive players make decisions based upon not getting hurt. The team would attempt to go around the pulling guard instead of holding their ground. You can have a team that is not talented but still be tough. we seem to be not so talented, and at the same time not very tough.

the other part that hurt is that if we played NW 10 times they win at least 9 of them. This was not an upset, this was the better coached, better team doing what they are supposed to do, to a less talented, less hungry team. Toledo beat PSU in 2000 and their coach Greg Pickel said that the result was not an upset. He said that we were better, we knew that we were better and we won. NW probably felt the same way going into the game. Michigan is not a great offense, but they will run the ball down our throat. USC has speed and will put up 40 points on us.......do not see how we score more than 14 points. Frees up my weekends.

Great memory. Backs were Sedrick Irvin and Marc Renaud. Irvin was a very good college RB, 3 years in a row over 1,000. The lingering memory I have from that game is that we had LaVar Arrington on the bench and Joe wouldn't put him in, even though our LBs were being destroyed. LaVar Freaking Arrington. It wasn't like it was the first game of the season, it was the end of the season. Think maybe LaVar deserved some playing time in that circumstance? I mean, it couldn't have been worse.

I thought last year marked the low point in LB play, but I was wrong. We are the exact opposite of read and react. It must crush Jack Ham to watch. Instead, we blindly run into the line of scrimmage and take ourselves out of the play at best, and at worst just fall down or completely whiff on a tackle. This is not Herschel Walker running, these are Northwestern running backs, and an OL missing starters. No excuse for this level of performance.

Yes, I remember. A guy I worked with was from Columbus and a big Ohio State fan, 'two two-hundred yard rushers?!'. I had nothing.

I posted this in the game thread. I was there in the end zone with the rest of the PSU fans. Play after play it was like the sea parting and a big green dude would chug down the middle of the field......

I remember another MSU game under Franklin were they rush for a million yards and a Offensive lineman scored a TD, that pretty brutal as well

I remember an MSU game where a PSU runner could have run for 600 yards if it was needed. Larry Johnson had 270 yards and sat for two quarters.
