Season ends in disappointment. Where do they go from here?

Have some nice pieces, but need to add correctly.

will he an interesting offseason with a possible delayed season etc.

Thanks for starting this. A Mets fan needs to start these threads. When thread creator extraordinaire starts all the baseball and football threads himself, it's more difficult to separate the Mets threads from all the others.

Biggest question is does Bichette opt in, or is there a bigger question for Mets?

Hope he opts in. Seems to really love Green. I know it seems bleak but we're closer to being great than most believe. There's a lot of positives but the negatives will tell you otherwise and they're the loudest.

I agree with you. This was a tough season to stomach, and was hopeful that Rutgers football would be a pick me up, but it's sports.
I'm not down on Semien. Ron, Gary, Keith were saying Senga wants a starting role-does he have options if Mets say he can only be a reliever?

I'll do a big recap on everything and it was tough but when we look back we're going to see how many rookies were grinding to win.

Semien I don't care about. He's a vet and if he stinks we have 3 replacements that could come up like Pitre Voit Rojas.

Senga is a good question. I don't know what they do with him. I say keep him in the pen as a set up guy to Williams.

We will know if there is a Spring Training when the CBA agreement is reached. Not one moment before.

That said, I would be shocked beyond belief if we have a "traditional" spring training, i.e. pitchers and catchers reporting in mid-February. The last lockout was resolved on March 10. They had an abbreviated spring training, pushed Opening Day back one week, and got all 162 games in.

I would happily sign up for that right now.

To your question about Senga, he has no more choice about going to the bullpen than Sean Manaea did earlier this season. If you want to get paid, you do what you're told.

So when might a lock out start? Meaning when does the CBA expire?

Right after the World Series?

Here are my Mets questions, in addition to the Bichette question. All these questions will be answered before the December 1 lockout.

1) Will Green keep the coaching staff intact? I hope so. I think they could use some continuity.

2) How aggressive will the Mets be in the pre-lockout free agent market? My guess is - not very. I think they will wait for the new CBA rules to be finalized before making any major moves.

3) Similar question - how robust will the pre-lockout trade market be? My guess is again - not very.

4) Which rookies will the Mets protect on the 40 man? Rojas and Wenninger are no-brainers, and then IMO there are a lot of tough decisions.

5) Which arbitration-eligible guys will receive offers and which will not? The two I am most interested in are Vientos and Mauricio.

It also stops the thread from starting with 16 consecutive posts by that same person with 16 different links and no actual thoughts.

As for Bichette- I can't see anything that would have him opt out. Even if offered a long term deal- what would he get at this point - 5/$120? He is a guy that is just a little better than an average hitter and can't run or field.

I actually think if Lindor/Soto are healthy all year- Bo can have a much better season- his problem this year is that he cannot be the star of your offense. Right now- if healthy, he would be the 4th best hitter on the team behind Soto/Lindor/Benge - and that would be perfect for him.

The potential lockout puts such an unknown into the off season- For a SP- I would like to see them go and try to bring Holmes back.

I can't see any way they give Senga another shot as a starter to start the season.

And the 2027 FA market is really kind of thin. And the big issue is that lockout- hard to commit a ton of money on Skubal if you are losing a year of service.

My personal opinion is Bo opts out. This offseason free agent class is weak and he would be the best hitter on the market while he won't get $42MM a year he should get a nice contract out of it. From a Mets fan perspective he doesn't fit our team.

If Bichette opts out, Mets pay him a $5M buyout. So the number for comparison purposes is $37M,

If we have Ewing in CF and Benge in RF- we can live with Soto being our primary LF...And my gut tells me that Soto would not take too well to being moved to 1B while still under 30

Some fun with stats. Note that these are aggregated team stats, and do not refer to any specific individual.

1) WHY WAS THE METS RECORD SO BAD?

Answer: They didn't score enough runs. They were tied with the A's for 20th (out of 30) in total runs scored. They averaged 4.31 runs per game. The league average was 4.48. Unless you have elite pitching and defense, which the Mets do not, that's simply not good enough.

The underlying stats bear this out:
  • 24th in OPS
  • 25th in On Base %
  • 24th in Slugging %
  • 24th in Batting Average
But now for the interesting (in my opinion anyway) stats:

2) HOME RUNS WERE NOT THE PROBLEM

Hitting home runs was pretty much the only thing this team did well. They were tied for 7th in total home runs. The teams they were tied with were the Dodgers and the Braves - pretty good company!

3) LEAVING GUYS ON BASE WAS NOT THE PROBLEM EITHER

I know it seemed like the Mets always left a ton of guys on base, but they really didn't. They were 21st in total LOB. This is a somewhat misleading stat anyway. If you don't get guys on, you won't leave guys on.

So what was the problem? I offer the following:

4) THE METS DID NOT HIT ENOUGH DOUBLES

I love doubles, because they produce runs. They are literally twice as good as singles. The Mets do not hit enough of them. 29th out of 30. I don't know why the Mets hit so few doubles, nor do I know how to fix it. FWIW, they were tied for 19th in triples, but that is a much smaller sample size.

5) METS WERE REALLY BAD AT STEALING BASES

Mets were tied for 23rd in stolen bases with 83 (league average 110). That in itself is not troubling as some teams run more than others. What is troubling is their success rate - 71%, which ranked 28th. Nothing kills a rally like a caught stealing, and the Mets had too many rallies killed in this fashion. Last year, the Mets were really good at stolen bases. Did Antwan Richardson make that big a difference?

6) METS DIDN'T GET ENOUGH FREE PASSES

Mets were 18th in BB and 28th in HBP. I find this latter stat interesting. For years Met fans were righteously indignant about opposing pitchers drilling our hitters with impunity. Hasn't been an issue this year.

Not sure how relevant any of this is, but I found it interesting. Hope you did too.

Yes Antwan Richardson made a big difference. Just look at Soto's stolen bases last year. He was never anywhere close to that previously.
