The defense wasn't worn down in any way prior to the last drive. Michigan had a 9-minute advantage in TOP for the game. The O line was on the receiving end of any "hitting" that was going on. The running game had ZERO to do with what happened on the last drive. Michigan had people in the correct position on every play. Iowa players out-fought them and executed brilliantly on that drive

All joking aside, there really shouldn't be an emphasis on one over the other unless you just have a generationally elite passing game or rushing game (2019 LSU with Burrow, Chase and Jefferson, or 1995 Nebraska with Tommy Frazier and Ahmad Green, etc).
A team like Iowa, at least during the KF era, is at its best when they strike a solid balance and isn't skewed heavily one way or another.
Yes, having a great running or passing game has helped, but our best offenses have always been able to move the football both ways effectively. And in years where we cannot do one or the other at all (2004 when we were almost dead last in rushing offense in CFB and still won the B10 title, our most recent btw..........or pick a year from 2022-2024 in terms of passing), we certainly have to scratch and claw and rely more heavily on defense and special teams and patchwork play to win games.
My brother texted and said we knew going in we couldn't run on Michigan. I agree and said I didn't like sticking to that really short passing game until it got down to crunch time late. The announcers talked about how we needed to throw it further down the field more.

Have never claimed to be a football savant. Have only suggested to understand football better than the high majority of fans that have no personal experience in the sport. Why wouldn't I?

But yes, I understand the factors that created '22/'23. And understand them to have had
almost nothing to do with BF.
It's funny how that knowledge aligns with the perspective of the foremost expert and most informed person about that situation, KF.
In strictly football terms, the expert did not see reasoning to fire BF.
And rather than fans admitting they were wrong about the situation, they accused KF of nepotism. Because it had to be one or the other.
Truly quite a sad accusation
So here's the thing. I'm a Kirk fan. I think the program under his watch has been in excellent hands. No, they haven't won championships, but very few have. Almost without exception they have been very competitive. With that said, Brian was a blind spot and a disaster as OC. that required the AD to step in. Anybody who says otherwise in the face of every available metric is either being purposely dishonest, or is completely incapable of seeing anything wrong with Kirk or his handling of any aspect of the program. It's at a religious level, and believers don't question their God.
He did, and I think it was a very good hire. It was only an option because action was taken by another to remove the incumbent.
