Oh I have PTSD from the ucla non call. I thought the keeper was falling before any contact
Every time we bring this up about the Non-call against UCLA that cost us from winning the national championship the more I get mad thinking about it. I am sure ND's players and coaches are feeling the same way. They got snubbed and Duke was able to tie the game. That should have been a win for then and a lost for Duke. We all know that fact to be true.

That’s great!

I know field hockey and softball are free at UNC. It would be great to include some others.

Wonder if they got a donation to cover costs for sometime. I know the department lost money last year, so not sure.
Free sporting events are about to be a relic of the past considering how much money athletic departments are losing now that they have to pay players. No way around it.

Two issues that will affect how and when sports go to a paid ticket structure:
  1. there is some number of gate revenue required where it costs more to issue tickets and man the gates than it does to simply let people in for free. if the equation is close, most programs will err towards free tickets for simplicity and hopeful increase to attendance.
  2. Many facilities are not yet set up to fence out unpaid customers and have a ticket office. UNC Field Hockey is an example. They would need to pay to create fencing and a main gate/ticket office.

You wonder how much concession revenue you lose by charging instead of free. UNC volleyball would be a good test case with that. Changed from free to 10-15 last year.

Trayer out at GK tonight - “under the weather” per the announcer, although I don’t trust that he knows anything about anything because his prior comment was discussing how we just got back Amari Manning from the U17 World Cup. Dude, she’s been back for a month.

Alvarez playing CB in place of Stratton. This is the back line that MSU took advantage of, and Virginia has already gotten behind them….not crazy about it. I still think if this is how it’s going to be, then Gaetino should be at CB and Alvarez at outside back.

Need to find out more about the Stratton injury…..that is a big loss for us…we also miss her on offensive corner kicks immensely, we have no one else threatening in the air at all.

And I’m assuming Stratton is hurt. If Damon just has her benched then I’ve got a big problem with that. Of course this announcer hasn’t bothered mentioning….

Goal Devey!!!! That’s two in a minute.

One of Gaetino’s infamous long balls actually works out….Devey just outran the slow back for Virginia and was all alone against the GK. Easy one there.

GREAT start Heels….hopefully we can keep our focus and not let up. First goal was a beauty, second was really poor defending and a bit of a gift IMO.

Game has settled in now…kind of at a stalemate as we’ve mostly just been content managing possession and not pushing forward aggressively. Gotta be careful not to get complacent, Virginia is good enough to pull a goal or two back if we lose our edge. I want to see a mentality to put them away and give them no hope.

Field is soaked... long ball works more when the ball dies when it lands - ha!

Not a great start to second half. UVA has had more possession and created several chances. They came out with more energy after the break. We need to wake up or we risk letting them back into this.

Virginia goal on a PK. 3-1. We have lost all of the momentum at this point. Damon needs to make some changes to reverse the course of the game.

Note that Denigan was subbed out for Straun. Wonder if Damon is limiting her minutes after coming back from injury or what.

UVA just hit the crossbar…nearly just made it a 1 goal game. This one is not over.

We absolutely lack the energy we had in the big dook win…not surprising, and was what I warned about for those that suddenly thought we were unbeatable. Right now we look lethargic.

Virginia subbing a lot more than we are…that may explain why we have faded and they have surged as the game has gone on. This has been a poor half for us, there is no other way to say it.

Also don’t understand why Damon won’t give a few more players some time, they earned it when we needed them, and it looks like some of our starters could use a rest.

Always happy with a road win in the ACC, especially against a ranked opponent.

Great start but definitely faded as the game went on and I do worry about the lack of substitutions, something that has been discussed by plenty of us on here before. Obviously it’s nitpicking to find things wrong with a win against a quality opponent, but we’ll have to be better if we want to get where we ultimately want to get later on.

Happy to see Denigan and Antonucci back on the field, although both showed some signs of rust, which is expected. Concerned about Stratton…we really need her back.

Props to Hannah Johann for coming in and playing solid at GK tonight.

Johann had an excellent game. Saved every shot in course of play, a couple were great saves.

players moved around a lot 2nd half. Towards the end Devey was basically a 4th defender.

agree we could have had more subs, especially with the Cal game coming up. 3 midfielders played the full 90. Pennie never tires it seems, but Kennedy and Manning slowed at times.

Field hockey is easy to fence off with bike barracades which is what they did for the final four in 2021 and 2023 and they will do for the ACC tournament this season.

Agree on the comments about Pennie…she seems like probably the most fit player on the team, she never stops working…as mentioned, she is absolutely money with the ball at her feet and almost never, ever loses possession. And what I love about her even more is the work she puts in definitely to hustle and break up passes, poke the ball away from opposing midfielders, etc. That is so valuable.

She can play the entire game and not drop off, as mentioned that wasn’t the case for some of the others….you could tell they were tired, I saw a player just dribble right past Manning, Blum, and Straun at different points late in that game and our player just gave up and stopped chasing, that bothered me. Pennie and Kennedy do so much work for us that probably goes under appreciated to the average/casual fan (who mostly just talk about the goal scorers), but I assure you the coaches and their teammates see it.

I’m interested to see how Pennie projects to the pro level. She is undersized, not really a threat in the air, and rarely gets involved in the attack, but she is absolutely so good at her strengths she more than makes up for it. That’s my only frustration with her though, she is so freaking good with the ball at her feet technically, I’m surprised that she doesn’t create more issues in the attacking third, but every player has their own personality.

Pennie is always open.
Always open because she never, ever stops moving off of the ball.

If you want to teach a young player something that will make them better, tell them to stop standing and just watching the ball (when they don’t have it) and to constantly be making runs into space to make themselves available to their teammates. As kids get older, it gets a lot harder to just dribble past people, but being a threat by moving without the ball can more than make up for that.

That was the difference I noticed late in the game, we got tired and our work rate dropped off a lot. Suddenly when we’d get the ball and try to play it forward, it’d be Devey up top all alone against 3 or 4 defenders, and our midfielders were not getting up the field to support fast enough, and we started losing possession a lot more than usual, as we just didn’t have as many passing options available. The substitution thing really irks me…Roosien and Mara are two players that more than held their own against dook and deserved a few minutes at least. When we were up 3-0 I just feel like we could’ve stolen a few minutes of rest for those that ended up playing 90 minutes, especially in the midfield considering how much running they have to do.

Still costs money, and you have to set them up and take them down every game, plus set up a front gate tent. That is a temporary solution, not a business model to sell season tickets at a profit.

You are not wrong, but some perspective:

when you go up 3 goals you take your foot off the pedal. It is human nature. When it is alcorn state it does not matter; you are still better. When it is a ranked team they are going to pull even when you were dominating.

this was a great win. We beat a ranked team on the road in dominant fashion. The game was literally never in doubt.

we have earned the #1 spot in the country doing what we do and how we do it. Nahas has consistently subbed 4 or 5 since he started. That is how he plays the game.

In most cases, that has had a lot to do with who is available and how much depth is actually on the team. In this particular game, for once, we had more depth. But that is going away again in one week. Maybe he wants players used to playing at the depth we will have in October?

Like many on this board, I don't understand why there wasn't more substituting especially with a 3-0 lead. If you trusted Roossien to play 82 minutes against Duke- how do you not use her last night? Bradley played 29 vs Duke and only 7 last night. Deus 53 against Duke and 22 last night. Just giving those players 10 more minutes each drastically improves the product on the field. And I would imagine we will need Bradley and Roossien when Deus and Manning head back to national team.
